Mouse created without father
Nature

Mouse created without father

Scientists turn egg cell into surrogate sperm.
22 April 2004
HELEN PEARSON

From time immemorial, making a mammalian baby has involved two essential ingredients: eggs and sperm. Now Japanese scientists have written men out of the reproduction rule-book, and created fatherless mice.

The team made the animals by combining the nucleus of one female's egg with that of another, essentially creating a mouse with two mothers. "It is a bit of a surprise," says evolutionary biologist David Haig of Harvard University, Boston.

After nearly 460 attempts at growing embryos, ten live pups were born and just one of those survived to adulthood. Christened Kaguya, from the story of a girl discovered in a bamboo stump, the mouse is now 14 months old and has babies of her own. She is "very healthy", says team leader Tomohiro Kono of Tokyo University of Agriculture.

Some might say that Kaguya is living proof of men's futility, in the baby-making stakes at least. But scientists maintain it is premature for chaps to step aside in human reproduction: there are significant obstacles to transferring the technique to the fertility clinic.

7. We did this in Atlantis 3000 years ago!
But we had to stop, because with two women, we did not know who to tease about the small "size of the male organ"!

But since only 40% of the women in the US would drop a male because inadequate organ size and/or bed performance, there seems a reason to keep the male sex going.

:-)

:toast:

(now why didn't Matcom post that positive 60% result when the survey came out a few weeks ago?)

:toast:

:-)

28. Okay, now what is the reason for keeping the male . . .
species around? Obviously, women will be able to procreate without sex or sperm. So what is the reason to keep men around again? (and no, I cannot believe it is because women are upset with their sexual prowess or the size of their member . . . GEEZ . . .don't you men get it).

I vote for three things.

1. Car maintenance.
2. Extra income.
3. Home improvement. (well, maybe one more (sex occasionally WHEN I WANT IT . . .not at 5 o'clock in the morning).

30. Well, the extra income would become unnecessary if more women
gained more power in the workplace as the numbers of men dwindled in the workplace, theoretically...

Hmmm....there are more women doing car maintenance and home improvement. Haven't you seen all those home improvement shows on TLC? ;-)

31. One more thing and then I will let it end here . . .
You know it is a mans' world when they can come up with a pill for a man to have a 36-hour erection AND insurance will pay for it (but not birth control pills still); however, they cannot cure cancer or AIDS or anything else.

Their priorities are shameful.

48. lotta rampant ignorance here
Edited on Wed Apr-21-04 05:43 PM by enki23
i've heard this bit far too many times now. it's time to start refuting.

viagra's erection-causing ways were discovered by accident. there was no campaign *at all,* that i'm aware of, to cure erectile dysfunction. i don't know that there was any serious research into the problem whatsoever. viagra was being tested for treating hypertension. the side-effect which led to its use as a treatment for erectile dysfunction was discovered during a small, 10 day study in wales. it has aboslutely *nothing* to do with preferential funding for male health problems. same thing for rogaine. rogaine, incidentally, was found because it was causing *female* test subjects to grow excess body hair.

while much of our social and economic structure *is* biased against women, using factually false examples is unlikely to be of much use in changing that.

56. Oh, they (researchers) and/or pharmaceutical companies
were not working toward a solution for impotence? Well wonder what the penile implant or pump was suppose to be for when they suddenly found it would help men with erections?

(Just kidding). I did not know that about Viagra so I have learned something today. However, I still do not think Insurance should cover Viagra and not BCP's. Double standard.

The Falkland Islands are a recent example...blame Maggie Thatcher.

And Queen Elizabeth I went to war with the Spanish as I recall...that whole Armada thing.

I'm sure there are plenty of other examples, those are just off the top of my head. Women are not pure paragons of virtue...we are human beings.

50. Whoops! Acutally, I did think of Thatcher and
Queen Elizabeth shortly after I posted, but didn't bother to edit. However, these are women in a male dominated world, having to play by those rules.

I do think women can have violent tendencies - I certainly have them - but I also think that there would be less war and violence if women dominated world politics. We have more of a natural tendency to cooperate, comprimise and preserve life. IN GENERAL - in other words, don't bombard me w/ specific instances of violent women - because I am speaking more about a paradigm than about specific incidents of female violence.

Have you seen the new bug vacuum. It's like a long tube that can suck the bug up into a holding area. Then you can release the bug outside (Democrat method) OR you can kill the bug and dispose
of it (Conservative method)

I was just telling my husband the other night I was going to buy one of those things. I think they run around $50.

33. Slink...this doesn't help the cause...
I'd rather woman were seen as complete human beings...capable of all the grace and evil inherent in that state...rather than as some paragon's of virtue. There is no guarantee the world would be a better place if we ran it...different maybe, but not better. There's no guarantee that after centuries of being "in charge" we wouldn't have developed the same sense of entitlement and the sexism that comes along with it that men have.

The truly "better" world would be one where men and women could share the load. One where we could fully utilize the talents and abilities of everyone regardless of gender.

24. Well, ain't this just dandy . . .
You know how we refer to Orwell's 1984 and how it has come true? Maybe all those Mothra and Godzilla movies that were made may be a little insight into what the future might hold as well. Coincidence . . .maybe . . . but I don't think so.

One thing though . . . a "fearless" mouse. I don't think the world is ready for attack rats (Yikes).

Seriously though, Dolly is already dead, and they are finding that cloned animals age twice as fast (almost)then regular animals. But

I wish they would put more into making more food, through cloning, to help people from starving rather than making a fearless rat or any other animal.

And the most important part of this experiment has nothing to do with reproduction.

This cell reproduction method is an excellent way to grow the very useful "stem cells" that can be used to cure a very broad variety of neurological diseases.
