Saturday 24 April 2004, 15:20 Makka Time, 12:20 GMT

Al-Sadr City is a poor Shia district within Baghdad

At least 11 Iraqis are dead and 30 wounded after rockets or mortar bombs slammed into a busy market in a Shia suburb of Baghdad amid renewed fighting with US-led forces.

Witnesses said at least two projectiles hit the chicken market in the Ourfalli neighbourhood of al-Sadr City on Saturday.

Abd Al-Jabbar al-Zubaidi, director of a nearby hospital, said several of the wounded were in critical condition.

It was not immediately clear who had fired the weapons.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A least 13 Iraqis were killed when rockets slammed into a Baghdad market on Saturday and insurgents killed five soldiers north of the city in the bloodiest month for U.S. troops since deposing Saddam Hussein.

An apparent suicide car bomb exploded in Saddam's hometown of Tikrit north of Baghdad, killing three Iraqi police and wounding 16 other people -- 12 of them police.

Officials said at least six other Iraqis were killed on Saturday in violence in Baghdad's Sadr City area and in Kerbala, south of the capital.

It was not clear who fired rockets into the chicken market in the Ourfalli neighborhood of Sadr City, powerbase of fiery Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, wanted by U.S.-led forces.
