States seek currencies made of silver and gold

By Blake Ellis @CNNMoney February 3, 2012: 10:53 AM ET

EW YORK (CNNMoney) -- <snip>

Worried that the Federal Reserve and the U.S. dollar are on the brink of collapse, lawmakers from 13 states, including Minnesota, Tennessee, Iowa, South Carolina and Georgia, are seeking approval from their state governments to either issue their own alternative currency or explore it as an option. Just three years ago, only three states had similar proposals in place.

"In the event of hyperinflation, depression, or other economic calamity related to the breakdown of the Federal Reserve System ... the State's governmental finances and private economy will be thrown into chaos," said North Carolina Republican Representative Glen Bradley in a currency bill he introduced last year.

Unlike individual communities, which are allowed to create their own currency -- as long as it is easily distinguishable from U.S. dollars -- the Constitution bans states from printing their own paper money or issuing their own currency. But it allows the states to make "gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts."

To the state legislators who are proposing state-issued currencies, that means gold and silver are fair game, said Edwin Vieira, an alternative currency proponent and attorney specializing in Constitutional law. And since gold has grown exponentially more valuable, while the U.S. dollar continues to lose ground, the notion has become increasingly appealing to state lawmakers, he said.

Whatever they decide, I wish they'd send a few thousand my way!

I'm tired of people like this having all the money --- (Romney supporter greeting him with her kids done up to spell Romney. The oldest child needs to trade places with the one to his left, because that's all Romney is about.....)

8. Birth control wouldn't be a bad idea, either
Did this woman even let her uterus fully retract between children?

This is what the GOP wants from women--to be brood mares, nothing more.

2. 10:1 it's the (dangerous, anti-American, crackpot) "sovereign" movement behind this.
These dangerous, anti-American crackpots:
http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-files/ideology/sovereign-citizens-movement

Typical: Jared Lee Loughner

"... At one point, Loughner refers disparagingly to 'currency that's not backed by gold or silver.' The idea that silver and gold are the only 'constitutional' money is widespread in the antigovernment 'Patriot' movement that produced so much violence in the 1990s. It's linked to the core Patriot theory that the Federal Reserve is actually a private corporation run for the benefit of unnamed international bankers. So-called Patriots say paper money — what they refer to with a sneer as 'Federal Reserve notes' — is not lawful. ..."

3. Yep. One of Ron Paul's goals IIRC
they're set on everything being illegal and unconstitutional etc, because of the federal reserve and what happened about 100 years ago with all that. I wouldn't be surprised to see them push much harder for their own sovereign country, and fight for it one day...

5. The Federal Reserve Is a Private Corporation
Incorporated in Delaware in 1913. It is not, in any way, government run. It does have private shareholders that have never been disclosed to the American public.

This is true.

6. In fact, your assertion is quite false.
Check any of the great number of articles on the subject that are available on-line.

Enjoy your stay.

"It was created on December 23, 1913 with the enactment of the Federal Reserve Act, largely in response to a series of financial panics, particularly a severe panic in 1907.<2><3><4> "

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Reserve_System

The website of the Fed is a .gov website www.federalreserve.gov

The President nominates its head and its board of governors, subject to Senate confirmation, just like any other agency of the Executive Branch of the federal government.

There is, however, some confusion about whether individual member banks of the governmental federal reserve system are government agencies or not.

And that is where some folks get confused. Or try to confuse others.
