London - Human waste could be turned into a new renewable energy source, scientists believe.

Scientists have developed a device that generates electricity from human waste.

The Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) devised by American researchers at Pennsylvania State University uses bacteria to break down waste, liberating electrons in the process.

Normally the electrons would power respiratory reactions in the bacterial cells and be combined with oxygen molecules.

I hope someone outside the US gets the rights to develop and manufacture the means for generating energy this way. Heaven knows it would be a Heaven-send for all those Third World countries with aging sewage systems and lack of funds for either sewage treatment plants, water pollution controls, or extra electric generating capacity.

Of course, since this looks like another nifty idea that wouldn't benefit the oil bidness, don't look for it here in the US of A.
