129. I respectfully disagree...
this should be shown in every theatre!

Then it can go to video or DVD or whatever. There would be far more public exposure if it is in theatres. Not everybody wants to buy videos or DVDs. But in-your-face advertising in the theatres would attract viewers.

133. True, because films of this type are not shown in most places.
Heck, here in St Louis we are just now getting a film, James' Journey to Jerusalem, that the NYT says was released in March. if Fahrenheit 9/11 is released in NYC and LA in August and it takes three months for it to reach smaller cities like St Louis then it's almost or after the election when it could do the most good.

fahrenheit 9/11 will not change the minds of the hardcore pug or Dem but it may change the minds of those who don't vote. Perhaps it will spur them to VOTE!

142. THere are pros and cons to releasing in both formats.
Edited on Sun May-23-04 04:18 PM by liberalnproud
First of all, it will not be a family film. I cannot tell you how many movies my husband and I have to wait for release to DVD because we can't take the kids to most movies. However we will make an exception and get a babysitter for this one. If it is released on DVD, that means it will also be available on PPV, which is what we DO order after kids are in bed.

I am in agreement that it should have a wide release in theatres as well as becoming available for rent or sale at least one month before election time.

on edit; of to on

On a more serious note, though, I can just imagine the yahoos saying the same thing: of course the cheese-eating surrender monkeys liked it - they just don't understand the glory that is GWB.

I'm off to France in just about a month - can't wait.

140. Some quotes from the jury:
On the politics of the film:

Quentin Tarantino: "Judging a film by its politics is a bad thing. If it wasn't some of the best filmmaking, then I would not have chosen it. <...> You can't strangle this movie with the title documentary. Michael Moore is f... with the format to bring us a movie-documentary-critical essay."

Tilda Swinton: "It's hard to imagine not being political. Ever since I was four I have always been political. One of the reasons it is radical in its politics is because of its relation to the media. It starts and ends with a question. It is sophisticated cinema. It wouldn't have served its political end if it wasn't a good piece of filmmaking. He has matured as a filmmaker since Bowling for Columbine. <...> It is not a film about Bush, nor Iraq but rather the system. In the words of Godard, ‘we spend so much time looking for the key to the problem; we need to begin looking for the lock.'"

Benoît Poelvoorde: "We had long and passionate debates. We put the politics aside so as to talk film. We are not here to give a morality lesson. Personally, I think that the Festival is very politically correct, yet on the other hand; it is hard to not be. <...> At the same time, Fahrenheit 9/11 is a political tract. His unique viewpoint is not a problem for me since we can collect information elsewhere and also listen to other opinions."

On awarding a documentary:

Kathleen Turner: "We felt it was more than a documentary. We believe this film creates its own category and that's why it stands apart."
Tilda Swinton: "The things Michael Moore says cannot be said on the media of TV. What he has to say has to be seen at the cinema. Who would have thought that cinema could get stretched this far."
Jerry Schatzberg: "I had to get over the mix of genres, to open my mind to animations, documentaries along side fiction. <...> Michael Moore has given us a film that makes you think in different ways."
Edwidge Danticat: "What struck me most was that I was laughing one minute, sobbing the next. I was taken to emotional heights. It let the voices speak for themselves, voices that are otherwise silent."

CANNES, France -- American filmmaker Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," a scathing indictment of White House actions after the Sept. 11 attacks, won the top prize Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival.

"Fahrenheit 9/11" is the first documentary to win Cannes' prestigious Palme d'Or since Jacques Cousteau's "The Silent World" in 1956.

"What have you done? I'm completely overwhelmed by this. Merci," Moore said after getting a standing ovation from the Cannes crowd.

There was a thread on this the other day whereein several posters said Godard was just jealous of Michael Moore primarily because most people outside a very small world of avant-garde cinema have never heard of Godard. So, we don't know who Godard is, see?

36. Michael just gave a live interview on France2 television.
He thanked everyone and was overwhelmed.

when asked if he wanted this film to defeat bush's re-election chances, he laughed and asked "Who gave you that idea?"

When asked if he was sure if the movie would be shown in the US before the elections. He was positively sure, even if it meant he had to physically go state to state to distribute the movie...France gave a huge gift to the United States.

53. Here's why CNN readers will laugh at your email
1) Your use of stupid (you sound like a partisan).
2) Your use of exclamations points (they make you sound hysterical).
3) Your use of "CAUSE" rather than "because" (it makes you sound provincial).
4) Your use of MOORES (without apostrophe)

------------------------

Let me be clear. I like your email, and I'm glad you sent it. Points 1) - 4) don't bother me in the least bit. But it will be ignored, if not laughed at. Sometimes we have to consider our audience and their presuppositions.

68.  more on Moore's film
Anti-Bush film wins Cannes prize
Director Michael Moore's controversial anti-Bush documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 has won the prestigious Palme d'Or best film award at the Cannes festival.
It was the first documentary to win the top prize since Jacques Cousteau's The Silent World in 1956.

The film received a 15-minute standing ovation when it was screened on Monday.

Fahrenheit 9/11 explores the Iraq war and alleges connections between President George Bush and leading Saudi families, including the Bin Ladens.

"What have you done? I'm completely overwhelmed by this," Moore said in his acceptance speech.

"The last time I was on an award stage in Hollywood, all hell broke loose," he added with a laugh.

Positive

The film was originally set to be released in the US through Disney subsidiary Miramax, before Disney blocked it. It is now expected to be released through a third party.

The critical reaction to the film has generally been positive, with praise coming from The Washington Post, Time Magazine and British newspapers including the Independent and the Telegraph.

However, others have been more critical of the film. The Hollywood Reporter said Moore was "pioneering a reality film as an election device."

And trade paper Variety described it as "rather less incendiary than expected" and said it was "a blatant cinematic 2004 campaign pamphlet".

Fahrenheit 9/11 was competing against 18 other films for the Palme d'Or.

Moore is socialisms worse enemy.

I would say Moore is the corporate oligarchist's worst enemy. I don't think Kim Jong Ill or Fidel Castro are quaking in their boots at the revelatiaons in Moore's latest movie. It's nice to see someone like Moore, a left-libertarian in a way teaming up with someone like Alex Jones (right-libertarian) in agreement with peoplelike Ron Paul and Cynthia McKinney in asking the hard questions that this administration refuses to answer.

His obvious 'big lie' about America will do far more harm to his cause than any petty political truths the film may expose.

This will be his greatest film so far, mark my words.

Less is Moore in subdued, effective '9/11'

May 18, 2004

BY ROGER EBERT FILM CRITIC

<snip>
CANNES, France -- Michael Moore the muckraking wiseass has been replaced by a more subdued version in "Fahrenheit 9/11," his new documentary questioning the anti-terrorism credentials of the Bush regime. In the Moore version, President Bush, his father and members of their circle have received $1.5 billion from Saudi Arabia over the years, attacked Iraq to draw attention from their Saudi friends, and have lost the hearts and minds of many of the U.S. servicemen in the war.

...
"Fahrenheit 9/11" documents the long association of the Bush clan and Saudi oil billionaires, and reveals that when Bush released his military records, he blotted out the name of another pilot whose flight status was suspended on the same day for failure to take a physical exam. This was his good friend James R. Bath, who later became the Texas money manager for the bin Laden family (which has renounced its terrorist son).

When a group of 9/11 victims sued the Saudi government for financing the terrorists, the Saudis hired as their defense team the law firm of James Baker, Bush Sr.'s secretary of state. And the film questions why, when all aircraft were grounded after 9/11, the White House allowed several planes to fly around the country picking up bin Laden family members and other Saudis and flying them home.
...
After the first press screening on Monday, journalists noted on their way out that Moore was more serious in this film and took fewer cheap shots. But there are a few. Wait until you see Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz preparing for a TV interview. First he puts a pocket comb in his mouth to wet it and combs down his hair. Still not satisfied, he spits on his hand and wipes the hair into place.

</snip>

Edited on Sat May-22-04 03:16 PM by Democat
Michael Moore has helped get us close to the point where it looks like Bush will lose in November.

In the last two years, Moore has had two best selling books exposing the Bush admin as well as his time touring the country spreading the word.

Michael Moore has been a huge asset to the left ever since 9/11 and to suggest that he is going to hurt rather than help Kerry is ridiculous.

The man stood up to Bush right after 9/11, when all of our idiotic Democratic "leaders" were so busy kissing Bush's ass.

Moore is fighting for his country and he is working as hard as anyone else to get rid of Bush.

104. Who was reaching the American public after 9/11 with an anti-Bush message?
Edited on Sat May-22-04 03:52 PM by Democat
Michael Moore.

Stupid White Men opened the gates for people in America to stand up and being critical of Bush again.

Before that book became a huge hit, many people, including most Democratic leaders, were kissing Bush's ass out of fear. Even though the Democratic leadership didn't seem to learn much, it was crucial in helping re-open a dialogue in America about Bush and his policies.

Maybe it's easy to be critical of Bush now, but try to remember what it was like after 9/11 but before Stupid White Men came out.

The publisher wanted to cancel or censor the book back then.

Times have changed, partially because of Moore.

106. Times have indeed changed because of Moore
He's part of the reason why we are in such a mess right now. Heck, his endorsement of Nader which helped Bush win in 2000 may have actually helped Moore by providing him lots of fodder for his books and films. So in a way, he gains personally and financially from his Nader endorsement while the rest of the world suffers.

I have those fears, too. I worry for instance that the protest in NYC during the Repug convention will get out of hand (a la 1968) and that will be used to discredit Repug critics.

When I get these worries, though, I just repeat "Howard Dean" "Howard Dean" over and over until I feel safe again.

Palme d'or is the best and the most prestigious international award for an actor or a director. If it takes place in France, it isn't a French award.

137. Yo, Michael!
Distribution in the U.S. is now guaranteed. This will be a must-see for all Americans, as the brave young Belgian actor warned us all not to "vote Bush" onstage. I don't care whether it's in the theaters, or DVD or VHS. It's goingt to be a must-see.

Seems like every day for Bush just gets worse and worse. Now he's covered with scars, falling flat on his face *again*. Add Michael into the mix and Bush won't just have bad days, he'll have bad months.

141. A great message from a soldier who's seen the film.
Found this on a message board. A very good read.

I have seen the film.

First a little about my background. I have served in the Military for 30 years and am a Viet Nam, Desert Storm and Iraqi veteran. I work as a broadcast Journalist and served for a year in Iraq. I hold 3 Army Commendation, 7 Army Achievement, a Joint Service Commendation, National Defense (2 Stars). Korean Defense Service, Presidential Unit Citation and wear the Secretary of Defense service badge. And was notified I am being considered for a Bronze Star (for my work in Iraq). I also have been stationed and served for 9 1/2 years overseas.

I was privileged to see this film before it went to Cannes on May 11 04. My wife a member of Military Families Speak Out was working with Mr. Moore to help my reserve unit get the body armor promised by Mr. Bush (but never showed up, oh yeah that's right reservists are second class citizens) when he had started to send the body armor and the Army command found out, guess what, rather than be embarrassed for once again failing to support it's reserve and Guard troops they finally found some and it arrived the next day. They could have had us armor sooner but the General in charge was to busy spending monies that could have bought us the body armor on himself ($50,000 on his office furniture, $10,000 on his bedroom suite and $10,000 on his 2 story, two porcelain bowl and sink equipped outhouse, complete with possibly, oh and over $250,000 on personal transport vehicles. We could not get armor for our vehicles ). But we all know (those of us in our unit) if not for the fact that Mr. Moore was sending us some it would never have arrived. Which is why we were invited to see the film at it's premiere in New York to a select audience before it went to Cannes. This is a film that should be shown to all registered voters and all citizens so they may understand how a few can manipulate the many. Just look to see how now that they (those who chose to send us off) still refuse to take responsibility by blaming all the actions taken on an Iraqi citizen that they followed blindly into a war. This administration knew what it was doing way before 9/11. Just look how they suspended the PERS Tempo laws (laws enacted to keep Reservists and Guard members from serving for more than 180 days. If so it allowed for a $100 a day bonus to be paid. I am owed under this program $31,000) To much of it just seems to convenient.

As to the film I would advise you to read his book "Dude, where's my country" it has all the relevant sources that went into the making of the movie. So for those of you who claim and spout that it is all propaganda and made up, the proof is supplied, as every fact in the film is verified by more than one outside source. It was an excellent film and I believe it portrays the facts (and lack of them by Mr. Bush) credibly. And the interviews by the American GI's in the film are all factual. After seeing this some of you will understand better why the prison abuses happened. It is disturbing in some parts and is real, it brought back some of the most unpleasant memories of what it going on in Iraq and this country. But it is factual and relevant.

As a broadcast journalist I examined the evidence and sources as brought forth by Mr. Moore and found them to be factual and relevant to events taking place in this country.

Also as a broadcast journalist who served for a year in the Sunni triangle region (Ramadi, Falluja and the Al Anbar region) I can say without any doubt the facts being reveled are truthful, having observed abuses by U.S. troops personally. Not just physical abuses, but stealing from families and others on a continual basis and numerous violations of civil liberties.

What many in this country should realize is the only thing separating us from the Muslim fanatics is a clause in the US Constitution that separates church and state. Without it we would be just like them.

So before you condemn this film, do something unusual for an American, see it before you judge it. And for once stop shooting the messenger.

143. Amazing
Truly amazing..

I used to resent Michael Moore after I googled Bowling for Columbine and saw all the sites showing all the false statements Moore used.

But now, I'm not too sure if they were false. Lately he has been more and more active in showing what a horrible war Bush has created and the lies that have been in circulation.

What I like about Moore is that he provides news links in every bit of commentary on his web site.

I am eager to watch his new documentary.

Bowling for Columbine was a very enjoying experience, but I felt I had been a tad bit lied to. I'm not exactly sure..

144. Just one last time to the top of the board.
My fingers were shaking as I typed it in. I couldn't believe that MM had just won the highest film award. I was in awe and I wanted to get it out on DU. We have much to be proud of. All around the world.

thread. Translated some of the pertinent comments.
Some film critics think that a political message shouldn't win the prize as a documentary since Moore's film is 'not really' a documentary.
Ah! Les regles de l'art!
