Ste of Ga Governor just declared Ga State of Emergency
This is all about the G-8 summit. Cnn scroll lines just stated that Gov. Sonny Purdue just declared The State of Georgia a State of Emergency due to the security risk of the G-8 summit. the state of emergency is to last 6 weeks. Does this mean we are under martial law?

16. Cliip from AJC article.
(snip)

Citing, among other reasons, the "potential danger to the persons and property of this state from unlawful assemblages, threats of violence and otherwise," the executive order creates a unified public safety command for the summit.

By aligning theGeorgia Army National Guard and state law enforcement and public health under one office, the order potentially reduces the response time of state agencies for terrorist strikes or disruptive demonstrations, Harold Melton, Perdue's executive counsel, said Friday.

Bill Hitchens Jr., the head of Georgia's homeland security office, will lead the command.

Protesters in Savannah said declaring a state of emergency was an overreaction. "I don't think it's usual. I don't think it's an appropriate response," said G-8 protest organizer Kellie Gasink.

(snip)

The last time a governor used such an order was during the 1996 Olympics, he said.

(snip)

"It will also make it more easy to justify our application to cover expenses for the summit with federal monies," Melton said.

Already, $25 million in federal money has been transferred to the state for security expenses and millions more could be tapped for National Guard costs, which would be paid directly to the Department of Defense

4. Essentially, yes.
Under such a move, I am sure what NatGuard as is left in the state would be activated. Police are gonna be able to get really agressive. I would counsel you to try to find a copy of the state of emergency plan to find out what it all means.

Now the fun really begins. Glad I am not down there. In fact(and this is from a guy whose family settled in SC and NC in the 1600s...A long and legendary history there...), I have become quite glad I just don't live in the south.

Governor declares state of emergency for G-8 Summit

The Associated Press - ATLANTA

Gov. Sonny Perdue has declared a state of emergency in six Georgia coastal counties beginning Monday as a security precaution for the G-8 summit.

Citing, among other reasons, the "potential danger to the persons and property of this state from unlawful assemblages, threats of violence and otherwise," the executive order creates a unified public safety command for the summit, set to take place June 8-10 on Sea Island.

The order, signed by Perdue on May 7, does not provide additional money or change criminal laws in Chatham, Bryan, Liberty, McIntosh, Glynn and Camden counties.

But the action, which could last through June 20, will align the Georgia Army National Guard, state law enforcement and public health agencies under one office, potentially reducing the response time in the event of terrorist strikes or disruptive protests, said Harold Melton, Perdue's executive counsel.

7. From Saturday: Kings Bay, GA Naval Base Locked Down
Edited on Mon May-24-04 11:21 AM by Minstrel Boy
I wonder if this has anything to do with it? (Those Israeli movers always find themselves in a mess 'o trouble, don't they?)

Suspicious moving van prompt Kings Bay lockdown
The Associated Press - ST. MARYS, Ga.

...

Two Israeli men working for a moving-and-storage company attempted to enter the base about 10:30 a.m. Friday to pick up some items in base housing, said base spokesman Ed Buczek.

One of them was unable to provide security personnel with proper credentials, so base personnel and bomb-sniffing dogs inspected the van.

"The military dogs were alerted to a scent in the cab of the truck," Buczek said. "Guards closed access to the base and notified the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service."

...

Kings Bay is near Sea Island, which will host the G-8 Summit next month.

20. THANKS for posting that again-
That was the very first thing I thought of
when I saw the headline.
Do we have a thread that has all of the
"mover, art student" incidents?
What happened with the two in Tennessee?
Do you have a collection of all of these stories?
I would love to have the compilation just to
do a little comparative research on what
other news stories were happening around the
same times....
Looks to me like the neocons are getting some
help from the Sharon thugs in creating chaos
in order to justify implementing martial law for the land.
Of course the "brown people" will be blamed.

The US initiative, to be presented at the June 8-10 Group of Eight summit in the United States, did nevertheless put pressure on Arab states to put the reforms on the agenda of their summit scheduled for May 22-23.

This is a snip fro the AJC article.

Gasink's husband, William Pleasant, plans to demonstrate on June 8-10 in Savannah in Forsyth Park, where protesters will have a "free speech" microphone set up, among other events.

Protesters expect to receive a permit Monday to march at 10 a.m. on June 8 in downtown Savannah.

54. near the G8?
The summit is being held on a damn island with, I think, no road access, at least a good 1.5 hrs from savannah. Sea island is a resort community I think. Is there any requirement for 'free speech zones' to be within at least one hundred miles of what you are protesting? The definition of the word 'near' is very maleable it seems.

I googled up martial law and this is the first link that comes up.

Fascinating article on http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2002/07/27/1027497418339.html

snapshot from the article:
==========================
FEMA, whose main role is disaster response, is also responsible for handling US domestic unrest.

From 1982-84 Colonel Oliver North assisted FEMA in drafting its civil defence preparations. Details of these plans emerged during the 1987 Iran-Contra scandal.

They included executive orders providing for suspension of the constitution, the imposition of martial law, internment camps, and the turning over of government to the president and FEMA.

40. Thanks Jukes and as far as fear, well we knew that
or at least most of us here at DU knew that that G-8 summit was a preview of the RNC. I think it could be worse as we have all of these Orwellian tactics being played out and I tell you this is not on the local news. If people are not tuned into CNN on the scoll line or happen to read a paper on page 7, they just notice that there is a lot more air patrol and a lot more cops out than usual. I have this deep sinking feeling inside of me after watching the WH Briefing and Scott the wimp McClellan dodging a question about free speech and Andy Card opposing Politial Talk Radio. I think the bill of rights is gone along with the consitution. People just are not aware yet. Te wold is not happy with us and where better to get mad than in the red red state of GA. Bush don't want to alienate this state as he has it wrapped up but what in the world does the rest of the world want to do to us thanks to this administration. We must all look like George Bush to them and that does frighten me.

45. Holy moly! I'm supposed to drive to Warner Robins from N.C. tomorrow
I'm working on a project in Georgia, and I have to head back there tomorrow afternoon....for a week or so.

Warner Robins is a big military town, and that's where I'll be staying. This whole thing has me MAJORLY spooked! What if the BFEE decides to nuke the place to make their point? These idiots want even more power than they have already.

Ya know somethin'? If we ever can get our votes to count again, and we DO manage take our country back from the forces of evil, I really think we need to have a Constitutional Amendment that says Martial Law can NEVER be declared without an act of 2/3 of Congress. We can have emergency preparedness people ready in case of a nasty disaster, and have protocal that our leaders will follow in the event of such an emergency. But NO RIGHTS should be forfeited without full approval of Congress.

Then we need to get the GOPer "groper-&-raper" ass kissers out of the Dem party!

Having george bush as president has shown this country -- at least the people who bother to THINK -- that the "powers" granted to certain people at certain times can be totally disasterous, in case that person (and their administration) turn out to be THE PEOPLE who would subvert our Democracy....could turn out to be the "terrorists" themselves.

What in the world has our country come to under the republican take-over? It is despicable!
