Kiwis off to Iraq

Stuff National News (New Zealand)

A group of 61 New Zealand engineers and support personnel will leave for Iraq in late September to carry out reconstruction work.

The deployment was for six months, with an option of another
six months, but if unrest meant they were unable to carry out the reconstruction work they would be brought home, Defence Minister Mark Burton said yesterday.

The situation in Iraq was "high risk" but all sensible precautions would be taken.

The New Zealand Defence Force engineers would be armed so they could protect themselves. ---
