Lawyers begin drafting response to church settlement proposal

Associated Press
Monday, August 11, 2003

BOSTON - As lawyers met Monday to begin drafting their response to the Boston archdiocese's settlement proposal in the clergy sex abuse crisis, alleged victims had a mixed reaction to the offer.

Some said it was a respectable starting point for negotiations; others said they would reject the proposal and take their cases to trial.

The archdiocese made the proposal Friday, offering $55 million to settle the cases of all 542 people who have filed lawsuits saying they were sexually abused by priests. The offer came just nine days after Archbishop Sean O'Malley was installed as the new leader of the Boston archdiocese following more than 18 months of turmoil.
