NYT: Bush Flies Over Fire Site to Promote 'Healthy Forests'

President Bush went on a helicopter tour today over a national forest hard hit by fires to promote a plan that he said would help control them, but that his critics said would allow excessive logging on federal land.

From his vantage aboard Marine One, Mr. Bush gazed on the destruction caused by a fire in the Coronado National Forest that destroyed more than 300 houses in Summerhaven this summer. Later, Mr. Bush clambered up to Inspiration Rock, a granite outcropping in the Santa Catalina Mountains, and spoke in front of the charred remains of Ponderosa pines. -

Environmentalists said the initiative did not address the real problem of the fires in Summerhaven, which was the need for more money.

"The administration's proposal neither focuses on communities nor provides additional funding to help make homes and towns safer across the West," William H. Meadows, president of the Wilderness Society, said in a statement. "Simply put, it will not help protect future Summerhavens from the risk of wildfire." -
