City Engineer Resigns For Military Duty in Iraq (volunteering)
The Stephens Media Group

SILOAM SPRINGS -- Army Maj. Bruce Kemmet resigned his job as city engineer Monday because he wants to help rebuild the war-torn Iraq. -

He's asked the U.S. Army Reserves to send him overseas so he can "serve my country as an engineer officer improving the soldiers' living conditions and rebuilding the infrastructure in Iraq," according to his resignation letter.

He's mulled it over for months, Kemmet, 41, said from his office Monday afternoon.

He hesitated to volunteer because he was in the middle of several construction projects at work -- and he has four children. -

1. At my company, I could enlist in the military,

and be granted a leave of absence for the length of my service, and then return to work. The time I served in the military would count as years worked. If I was young enough to enlist, I'd do it just for the experience -- a safety net like that doesn't come along every day. There are things I despise about the military, especially the way it's being used these days, but the experience would be priceless. I can understand this guy's motivation.
