TV Plans Low-Key Observance of Sept. 11
I can't believe two years have passed already! :-(

Two years removed from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, broadcast networks will mark the anniversary with news stories but aren't planning to interrupt their regular schedules.

It's in marked contrast to last year, when the broadcasters devoted much of their day to the anniversary either with news specials or, in NBC's case, a commemorative concert.

"My sense is that this anniversary, the second anniversary, feels different than the first in scale and the kind of coverage appropriate for the day," said Mark Lukasiewicz, executive producer for special projects at NBC News.

NBC hasn't firmed up its plans but, like ABC and CBS, doesn't expect any prime-time specials. The networks are waiting to see if New York City will announce any commemorations that they will deem worth covering.

2. Yep, me too. It's been, like, 24/7 since then. Screw those 3000 people.
Besides, it was soooo long ago. :eyes:

I swear, some people can be so heartless.

3. that's not what I meant
I meant, why do we need to be reminded of it on tv?

As if our own memories won't suffice?

Do they really think anyone will forget that day?

4. You don't have to watch TV. And yes, people will forget.
But, I would say if the current administration tries to take advantage of it yet again (in the form of speechs, etc), that would piss me off.

5. So, the world should stop on Sept. 11th?
Who are you in real life, Darryl Worley? No we haven't forgotten; we just don't think we should have to hit the PAUSE button every Sept. 11 for the rest of our lives to goosh out some fake patriotism.

It's just a day in history, like Dec. 7th. We don't spend all day commemorating the attack on Pearl Harbor, do we?

It's not like we actually DID anything about Sept. 11th. We at least went after the bastards who attacked Pearl Harbor. I suppose if you want to go out of your way to commemorate Sept. 11th, you can ask your friendly neighborhood neocon how the hunt for Osama bin Laden is coming along, what specifically Iraq's connection to 9/11 was, and whether he (it's usually a he) REALLY feels safer now.

The original Worley rant:

7. I'm doing anything special that day.
But I don't knock people (including the media) for doing so. A lot of people were mentally and physically hurt that day, and it wasn't that long ago (unlike Dec 7, 1941). It's part of the healing process.

15. And at least certain former captives may not have wanted everyone to press
"pause" on their lives every 11-04 on the anniversary of a certain embassy being stormed in Iran.

8. and the people are still not allowed
to know anymore than was revealed in the two days after 9/11. Nor is TV interested in anything other than ceremonies and funerals and ratings.

12. I feel this way
It was really sad and upsetting. But at the same time the nonstop 24 hour TV coverage depressed me a lot. A Three Hour TV show is one thing, but to blanket the TV with it for the whole day made me feel very horrible and depressed. By that evenining I wanted to turn off the TV because I felt downright horrible and distraught.

I have the utmost sorrow for every family who lost relatives and think they should be memorialized, but I dont't think people should make money off the comercialization of their misfortune.

13. I hope it's not because all the networks are planning ...
.... their 24-hour saturation coverage of next year's GOP convention and Bush gloatfest set to coincide with the THIRD anniversary of the attacks.

was again wondering today what was more patronizing, any pilot telling you how to fend off would be sky pirates or the supposed American "President" telling us all how to commemorate the anniversary of a certain terrorist incident which I know and expect that he will do.

On edit it's a wonder he didn't go so far as to have everyone FAST and PRAY and DO NOTHING THROUGHOUT SEPTEMBER except THINK ABOUT and REMEMBER SEPTEMBER ELEVENTH.

17. Wrong approach......
Networks should be screaming about 2 years, and no firings!, no investigations!, no answers!, no Saudi reparations! 911 needs to be shouted across the mountain-tops as an indictment on the whole Bushie misadministration!

18. it figures
they kissed his ass last year but can't really lie a lot again, so they go low-key.

i live in nyc too and worked in the wtc (not in 2001 though) and i can't believe how people HAVE forgotten. they don't care. they don't care about knowing what happened that day, don't care about the investigation, don't care about hearing any questions about what happened that day ...

"never forget"????

all we do in this country is forget.

sigh.
