Bush courts voters in Democratic stronghold

DULUTH, Minn. - In a Democratic area where being a conservative on social issues plays well, President Bush reminded a friendly audience Tuesday of the stark differences between himself and Democratic hopeful John Kerry on abortion and gay marriage.
Bush spoke for 45 minutes to a crowd estimated at more than 7,000 people in northeastern Minnesota, where Republican presidential candidates usually struggle. The speech was also broadcast live on local television stations.
Aside from a few local tie-ins - including a mistaken reference to the "Iron Ridge" instead of the Iron Range - Bush used his remarks to recap the high points of his presidency, from his handling of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
But he received the most applause when he mentioned his opposition to abortion and gay marriage.
"On the positions that so many Americans share, my opponent is on the other side. That is not the mainstream in this country," Bush said.
