Fewer US jobs posted on Web in July, Monster says

NEW YORK, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Online job postings declined in July for the first time this year, a report said on Thursday, a potential sign that the U.S. economy is still having trouble generating employment.

The Monster Employment Index, which is based on figures collected from over 1,500 Web sites, edged lower in July to 134 from 136 in June, though it remains well above a reading of 102 at the start of 2004.

Job creation had picked up in recent months, but those looking for work in June had a tough time finding it.

But other industry surveys have also suggested a slowdown in the pace of hiring, worrying some economists that they may have been overly optimistic in devising their employment forecasts.

1. Don't be surprised to see the new July numbers fall well shy of

the analysts expectations of 240,000. DOL will release report at 8:30am tomorrow. Last month's numbers were expected to be 248,000. Actual number was 112,000... 38,000 below the number needed just to sustain population growth.
