Florida National Guard prepares for Charley and Bonnie

The Times-Union
Members of the Florida National Guard and the Department of Civilian Affairs gathered at the Robert Ensslin Armory off SR 207 in St. Augustine today, where the guard's new Joint Emergency Operations Center is located.

This morning saw a flurry of activity as members of various units and agencies settled into the new facility and got up to speed coordinating manpower and equipment around the state in anticipation of the possible paths of Hurricanes Bonnie and Charlie.

Wait a minute! What ARE those National Guardsmen doing in Florida? Why aren't they helping to destroy Najaf?

I just came saw this story and looking at the photo, then seeing your line gave me a much needed crack-up.

2. "Why aren't they helping to destroy Najaf?"
This isn't a joke. I talked to a friend of mine who works for the Red Cross in Fl. She is extremely worried because so much of the Florida NG is deployed. They are trying to scramble because they are so short staffed.

4. That's what I was pointing out, which has been discussed exhaustively:
depletion of the Guard nationwide from positions where they are needed.

6. I'm not slamming your post.
Just adding the perspective of my friend. One of the reasons she is so worried is they are expecting a lot of flooding - and they need heavy equipment for that type of thing. The coast guard is trying to fill the gap but they may not be able to. She and several other volunteers are phoning marine service companies looking for help ...

3. Where did they find them?
We don't have any left in our state!

This is serious business tho. Two systems will dump a foot of water on already saturated ground in the south. The death toll is always higher from drowings and other flood related deaths than the actual winds.

I hope my family all stays safe (Orlando, Myrtle Beach, and NC).

8.  Looks Like Mother Nature's Gonna Take Care Of Diebold
It looks like Mother Nature's gonna take care of those Diebold voting machines - one way or another, somebody's gotta clean up Florida! I still pray for the safety of all of the people in Florida - don't get me wrong.

10. A wind or tide which would seek out those damned Diebolds, right?
That would be heavenly. What a setback to the Florida Republicans, however, to have to suffer through a clean election.

Good luck to the DU'ers we really need to stay intact who live in South Florida.

9. Here's the real story behind the photo........
The Times-Union

The only five members of the Florida National Guard who are not now serving in Iraq, gathered at the Robert Ensslin Armory off SR 207 in St. Augustine today, where the guard's new Joint Emergency Operations Center is located.

This morning saw a flurry of activity as all five members settled into the new facility and got up to speed, dividing the state into five jurisdictions. Each Guardsman will work around the clock to protect the citizens of Florida to the best of his ability.
