Wider FBI Probe Of Pentagon Leaks Includes Chalabi

By Robin Wright and Thomas E. Ricks
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, September 3, 2004; Page A01

FBI counterintelligence agents are investigating whether several Pentagon officials leaked classified information to Iraqi politician Ahmed Chalabi and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, according to a law enforcement official and other people familiar with the case.

snip

The FBI probe is actually much broader, according to senior U.S. officials, and has been underway for at least two years. Several sources familiar with the case say the probe now extends to other Pentagon personnel who have a particular interest in assisting both Israel and Chalabi, the former Iraqi dissident who was long a Pentagon favorite but who has fallen out of favor with the U.S. government.

The sources and others interviewed for this article spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is highly sensitive and involves classified information.

There appears to be at least two common threads in the multi-faceted investigation. First, the FBI is investigating whether the same people passed highly classified information to two disparate allies -- Chalabi and a pro-Israel lobbying group. Second, at least some of the intelligence in both instances included sensitive information about Iran.

The broader investigation is also looking into the movement of classified materials on U.S. intentions in Iraq and on the Arab-Israeli peace process, sources added.

3. If I believed that anything

would come out of any of this, I might think this good news.

But outside of screwing a few patsies, or, more likely, failing in the attempt, I expect nothing. After all, this is exactly what we have gotten from all these "investigations" from the Anthrax attacks on down.

The neos are just trying to lull us into believing that something other than the vote (you know, like the law) has a chance of stopping them. And some other people are trying to pretend like they are doing their jobs... Their goals coalesce for this "piece".

4. Even if Bu$h is re-selected, he will be Impeached.
Thats what I have been telling the local Repubs. Some yell, some call me a liberal, but most shutup and change the subject. I say, it don't matter to vote for him because on way or an other, he's gone.

11. chalabi was sworn in to the Iraqi puppet Parliament on Wed....

right after his little old assasination attempt. I kid you not...

http://www.rnw.nl/hotspots/html/irq040903.html

<snip>
One of its most prominent former members was Ahmed Chalabi. For a long time he was considered the US's favourite to become the new leader of Iraq. But a few months ago, he fell from grace amidst accusations of fraud and forgery and an arrest warrant was issued against him. Those charges have apparently been dropped, allowing Mr Chalabi to be sworn in as member of the interim parliament on Wednesday shortly after a botched attempt on his life.

Sceptics
Mr Chalabi's sudden return to grace - or at least to respectability - is set to strengthen scepticism about the new parliament whereas the assassination attempt highlights another key problem: chronic insecurity and violence. This violence originated from forces resolutely opposed to the American-led occupation and to any individual or institution collaborating with the Americans. None of these forces are represented in the interim parliament.

12. When I went to print the WaPo story, it came up blank
Well, actually an ad (on the print out page) did print, but no text. This isn't the only time this has happened to me. Then I copied the text into Word and that crashed. I finally got it, but it took awhile.

13. one more time
The federal prosecutor handling the Israeli spy case, Paul McNulty, the US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, has a "very good reputation" as a "hard-core, very aggressive prosecutor," one formal federal prosecutor said.

http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/J...

Warning.

See this? "The federal prosecutor handling the case, Paul McNulty, the US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, has a "very good reputation" as a "hard-core, very aggressive prosecutor," one formal federal prosecutor said"

Do you know who Paul J. McNulty is?

He's a fixer. A FIXER.

Clinton impeachment. FIXER

Florida recount. FIXER.

Ashcroft's nomination. FIXER

"McNulty is accustomed to high-profile, high-pressure situations. He was chief counsel to the House subcommittee on crime during hearings into the disastrous 1993 federal raid on the Branch Davidian compound outside Waco, Texas. And he served as chief counsel and spokesman for House Judiciary Committee Republicans during impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton.During a nighttime jog on Washington's National Mall, McNulty conceived then-House Judiciary Chairman Henry Hyde's opening statement for the Senate trial. McNulty contemplated the oath that the 100 senators would take at the trial's outset, the oath of office that the president took to uphold the Constitution and the oath that Clinton took when he testified.McNulty realized that the concept of the oath unified his thoughts."The oath," Hyde, R-Ill., would say later on the Senate floor. "In many ways the case you will consider in the coming days is about those two words: 'I do.'"McNulty later served as chief counsel to House Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas. McNulty returned to the Justice Department, where he served as chief spokesman under President George H.W. Bush. A year ago, McNulty headed the younger Bush's transition team and prepared Attorney General nominee John Ashcroft for his Senate confirmation hearings.Knowing that Ashcroft's hearings would be contentious, McNulty assembled top GOP lawyers to brainstorm questions that the former Missouri senator would face. By the time the hearing began, McNulty had prepared a weighty briefing book with appropriate answers. As Democrats grilled Ashcroft about his support for civil rights, McNulty sat just behind his elbow, straining forward as he balanced the book on his lap."

The thread I see is that it's Rethuglicans acting outside the law dong what they believe to be good deeds for America. In the end their self righteous indignation make me want to vomit.

15. It should remind you of Iran-Contra; it's a re-run
Same criminals, same lack of prosecution.

BTW a good read for background on the current crimewave is Gary Sick's "October Surprise." It puts Iraq into an interesting context, including information on Israel's involvement in Iran.

17. Yes, they are sinking this country into a quaqmire of corruption
I still don't see any calvary charging over the hill. Some people like to say it's up to us, but I haven't noticed I have much effect on the nation's course.

I'm sorry folks, I'm a little rocked right now.
