Jamaicans Flee as Ivan Approaches (Direct Kingston Strike Expected)

This is really not a light matter, and at the risk of sounding like Freeper scum, we should pray for the people of Jamaica. My dad took a business trip to Kingston and the area around it a few years ago. This sort of storm would destroy *EVERYTHING*.

3. I heard earlier
that only a few hundred people out of the TWO MILLION who live there have gone to shelters. But how will those shelters survive, anyway? It's so frightening - Jamaica is just a miniscule bump when compared to the size of that storm.

I'm really sorry for everyone in Ivan's path. :(

4. Thanks for your concern
My mother lives in Montego Bay. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the whole country.

i know several jamaicans with family there. they are already starting on the barrels! some photos show a hit on kingston, some show montego bay/west end hits. either way, it's going to be very very bad.

5. I really fear for Jamaica
Spent three weeks there last summer mostly in Port Antonio and Negril.

If this wipes out a lot of tourist spots, and I think it will, that will devistate this country, which depends so heavily on tourists dollars. Unemployment will be staggering.

And I fear the *Admin won't be very sympathetic in retaliation for their defying us and harboring Aristide for a while after the recent coup.

6. also watchful, prayerful...
Always wanted to go to Port Antonio-- but I did spend a month in the village of Oracabessa once...

That area wouldn't have the resources to recover from a major hurricane blow... And I think of a lot of the children I met while there, and how few resources their families have, as well...

It's very heart-rending, and I hope for the best for them...

Relief supplies in large quantities might be more useful. If someone has a good relief link for sending donations please post.
