Bustamante's run excites Latinos
Many perceive a strong role in helping to shape outcome

NANCEE E. LEWIS / Union-Tribune

Alfonso Camacho, 23, says he wouldn't feel comfortable voting for Arnold Schwarzenegger because of the actor's support of Proposition 187. Camacho said he is leaning toward Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante.

Eighteen-year-old Martha Ochoa voted for Gov. Gray Davis last November and doesn't think he should be recalled. But when Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante entered the race, she suddenly began looking forward to the Oct. 7 election.

Like many Latino Democrats, Ochoa will still vote against the recall. But she'll also vote for Bustamante, in case Davis loses his job.

"I feel now that I have someone I can vote for," said the University of San Diego student.

Latino interest in the recall election has grown dramatically since Bustamante, the grandson of Mexican immigrants to the Central Valley, entered the race for governor.

"You can feel the electricity," said Mateo Camarillo, president of the Chicano Democratic Association of San Diego County. "It's dawning on people that they're right in the middle of history being made and that they have a role in shaping that history."

2. This article puts to rest the lies the mediawhores were saying
just a couple of weeks ago that Latinos would go for Arnie. Here in my state of Arizona, the Lation population is very complacent. (I am a Latina) It is very hard to motivate them to go out and vote, but not in California. The Latino electorate is very active since Prop 187.

This is very good news for Cruz and the Dems.

9. i agree!
the latinos in my office have all stated that they will vote no on the recall and yes to bustamante. the people who are having the most problems with cruz are the black people i've talked to. they do NOT like him for the most part.

20. had to laugh!
Was watching one of the media whore stations (CNBC?) and they were saying that Ahnuld had massive appeal to Latino males because he was so macho! Being the Terminator and Mr. Universe, etc. was what Latino males truly yearn to be and thus, they have the admiration for.

Lets face it, the GOP is scared shytless!

Talk about something backfiring on you (racist pigs!) ! :nuke:

25. sorry I don't
Edited on Mon Aug-25-03 06:16 PM by twilight
It was on television earlier today - I believe it was on MSNBC. It was very grotesque and angered me. It thwarts Latino males into a category that is absolutely degrading, like they don't think beyond the strength of a macho body. Thats what you call "profiling" in my book, I don't know about yours.

The only reason I laughed is because it made me acutely aware of how desperate the GOP is to steal California.

They are still pushing Ahnuld right now on MSNBC on Hardball which is on now. Matthews is interviewing Coulter about it.

Sorry I don't have a link!

3. the GOP's worst nightmare...

They gave California's progressives something positive to do. Worse yet, they could end up with one of "those" as Governor instead of a good Aryan like Ahhhnold...

I'd have trouble getting excited about a tax increase as a platform.

Edited on Mon Aug-25-03 01:48 PM by SoCalDem
nothing is FREE.. even freedom costs....in money and LIVES..

If the Repube govs can raise their state's taxes to cover the chimp's shitty little cowardly ass, then so can Calif..:)

Do you even live here??

The only "crime" Davis committed was being a democrat in a state that HATES THE ASSHOLE in chief's guts...

He thought he could steal Calif, but I don't think it's gonna work, unless he can Diebold us.. But then we already got Enroned, and we survived That..

Bring it on..

12. I'm sick of irresponsible California governors, both D and R
Davis kept merrily spending away, even after the tax base was severely eroded and couldn't support his desires to keep increasing the state payroll and paying for things the state couldn't afford.

Is it too much too ask that a governor exhibit at least a modicum of fiscal responsibility?

And, yes, I live here.

16. WHO CARES ABOUT TAXES!
Edited on Mon Aug-25-03 03:09 PM by Ernesto
With tax refunds the chimp tried to buy my vote with, I'll cheerfully pay my share! After all this circus started with the Bush/Cheney/Pete Wilson//energy rip-off. Let's think of a tax increase as just another benefit of having the illegit bunglers in power.
PS. I bet Cruz can actually pronouce "California".

18. How do you expect to
pay for things like roads etc. if you don't have taxes. I am sick of this repug attitude that things should be free, they always have their hands out. There is nothing wrong with fair taxes.

13. I hope Bustamente slaps cuffs on Cheney as soon as his plane lands

I hope he appoints a state attorney general that charges Cheney with fraud and collusion the next time Cheney goes to California.

Price fixing during the energy crisis.

Continued conspiracy to commit further fraud by refusing to release minutes to the Energy Task Force meetings.

30. Exactly!

nice page, Rebellious Republican.

That's what I'm talkin about!

Davis should have gotten his attorney general to subpoena and extradite Cheney. Point exactly to the cause of the power outages and the subsequent bankruptcies: Cheney's Energy Task Force.

14. Glad to seeone suggestion of mine blossom
naturally. The return of the first Latino governor since the days of Old California! Democrats seem innocent at times to the popular enthusiasm of candidates from the real people. The frauds of the GOP keep propping up empty suits with glamour and gush. We provide quality and reality AND when popular mood is fired it seems a happy accident.

We have been worried about countering the mills of Satan, of deflating the airless actor and researching his possibly classic fascist past. The shoe will be on the other foot and it is time to grasp the wave and look for THEIR reaction.

Which will be: to promote the Green Latino candidate, with money and ads. To character assassinate Bustamnte and discourage and divide the Latino voters. That is what they do best. In fact, that is pretty much ALL they do that has any effect.

Thanks to the general free ride pass of the exalted Mr. S(uperficial), the desperate tactics of body blocks with GOP heavyweights running stunt men interference for their empty suit is exposing this attempted coup for all that it is. Keep hammering on this.

I know this sounds bad because what's going off in CA shouldn't be happening but I hope Cruz gets in. Gray Davis has been screwed with big time so let Cruz take over.

27. I believe this very well may be the result
I think Davis will end up keeping his job myself. Thus, a wasted $70 million, but a crushing blow to the pukes nonetheless!

Good PR for Bustamante in any event!
