Potential voters are being registered at what appears to be a record rate in Michigan this year as activists and interest groups seek every possible advantage in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 2 election.

The number of registered voters stood at 7,044,214 on Friday, its highest level ever, officials at the state Bureau of Elections said.

New voter registrations are pouring into clerks' offices around the state in advance of the Oct. 4 deadline. Officials in Detroit's Elections Department said they've received 1,000 or more a day for the past several weeks. In Waterford Township, clerks have received more than 400 a week. In Bay City, up to 50 a day have been coming into the office.

"We are getting an enormous number of applications to register," said Ann Ulrich, clerk of Hartland Township in Livingston County. "There's a very heightened awareness for this election."

Political factions that range from evangelical Christians to hip-hop artists are taking credit for signing up thousands of new voters.

1. I was at Chula Vista Center in San Diego tonight...
...and there were 2 tables set up with people asking everyone who passed by if they were registered. All of the volunteers were wearing Kerry/Edwards buttons or t-shirts, so I asked them if they were registering everyone who came in irregardless of Party Affiliation. I have to admit I was surprised by their response, "Of course. We don't care who people vote for, but we want to make sure people do vote." This is what I like about my party- we always take the high road. I doubt Republicans would be as unbiased.

6. That could vary by state. If you are a volunteer, not
an official party worker, the rule may not apply. Check with your county clerk.

8. It is still SO important that county officials follow through with proper
registration processes. You can be registered and not be on the computer generated rolls on election day. Bring your ID and don't leave without casting a provisional ballot!!!!!!!!!
