Father charged in attack on children at their Elgin home

An Elgin man has been charged with three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill after attacking his three children Friday morning, sending one to the hospital with stab wounds.

Kershaw County Sheriff Steve McCaskill said Eric Steele, 38, of Aberdeen Way, is in custody at the Kershaw County Detention Center pending bond in connection with an assault on his children, ages 9, 11 and 13.

``The family has been experiencing financial problems,`` McCaskill said. ``Their house was in the process of being in foreclosure. From what we have gathered thus far, Mr. Steele had planned to kill his family, burn the house and then kill himself. He got up this morning and decided to enact his plan by trying to kill his children first.``
