Tokyo - Powerful Typhoon Meari hit Japan's southwestern Kagoshima prefecture on Wednesday morning, causing power failures and evacuation orders.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the typhoon, the season's 21st, hit the city of Makurazaki in Kagoshima just before 9am (00h00 GMT) and winds up to 185km/h were recorded.
At least 131 700 households in the Kyushu region, including Kagoshima and Fukuoka prefectures, have lost electricity, due to Meari, according to a spokesperson at Kyushu Electric Power.
More than 1 600 people in Kyushu have evacuated to public halls and other safer places, according to NHK TV.
