Republican Web sites downed by mystery outage

The Republican National Committee and the Bush-Cheney '04 campaign are investigating outages that left GOP.com and GeorgeWBush.com inaccessible for six hours on Tuesday.

The two Web sites failed to respond to some Internet requests starting around 8 a.m. PST and were largely unresponsive by 9 a.m. PST, according to Web site monitoring service AlertSite.com. The problem seemed to most affect GeorgeWBush.com, which became largely inaccessible within an hour.

The outage also affected the RNC's alternate address--RNC.org. By 1:45 p.m. PST, the RNC's Web sites were again accessible, but the Bush-Cheney '04 outage continued.

"We don't have a lot of information," said Scott Hogenson, director of radio and online media for the RNC. "We are looking into it. But it was no big deal."

26. We had a local outage

that affected only this site and selected liberal blogger sites, those not as traditional or big as the DNC. I flipped a bit, did all sorts of bug checks and found by erasing garbage in the failed URL manually I could get back on. After seeing it happen to non-lib or non-political sites I finally got back on I saw nothing really happened nationwide though in other parts of the region odd outages occurred.

Who knows what is afoot but I would look to all types of security at all levels, not that it would help any party much right as things stand.

"Largely unresponsive" and having the outages affect alternate addresses seems to me to indicate a problem with the DNS entries that relate the url to the ip address of the server.
