Support shrinking for Bush's anti-terrorism policies: poll

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s approval rating in the fight against terrorism dropped below 50 percent this month for the first time since the September 11, 2001 attacks, according to a poll out.

Bush's approval rating on that question was 62 percent last month, 58 percent in August and 56 percent in June.

With less than two weeks to the November 2 election, the Pew Research Center poll of 1,307 registers voters showed Bush and Democratic challenger John Kerry (news - web sites) tied at 45 percent among registered voters and at 47 percent among likely voters.

Those numbers were a net gain for the Massachusetts senator, who had trailed in both groups earlier in the month.

12. Couple of questions.

First, the article doesn't appear to mention what the actual number is for Bush's approval rating in the fight against terrorism, unless I missed something. The "tie" numbers seem to be the horse race numbers, rather than the specific terrorism issue numbers.

Interesting wording in the second sentence, giving Bush's approval on the terrorism question in the last three months in REVERSE order. Wouldn't it make more sense to show the trend as June - July - August, followed by the new number? That would give us 56 - 58 - 62 - < 50, showing a dramatic decline, whereas the reverse might fool some readers into thinking that the most recent number before dipping below 50 was 56. Or am I paranoid?

At any rate, if Bush's terrorism approval rating was 62 LAST MONTH and is NOW below 50, that's a huge drop in one month. And "below 50" could even mean something like a 15-point drop -- we don't know without the exact number.

Okay, someone tell me if I've missed something.

but you're right. I read it really quickly and did have the idea that it was a gradual downward trend, not an upward trend followed by a huge drop.
