First Lady Says No Apology Needed

NEW LONDON, N.H. (AP) -- Laura Bush said Thursday that Teresa Heinz Kerry didn't need to apologize for saying she couldn't remember whether the first lady had ever had "a real job."

"She apologized but she didn't even really need to apologize," Mrs. Bush told reporters at a coffee shop before attending a rally for President Bush. "I know how tough it is and actually I know those trick questions."

USA Today had asked Heinz Kerry, the wife of Democratic candidate John Kerry, if she would be different from Mrs. Bush as a first lady.

1. Some civility from the * camp ...

2. That's not what Karen Hughes said
And who would know better than her?

Seriously, though, it's unexpectedly gracious of Laura Bush to say this publicly.

3. Well that was nice of her
That should be the end of the story right? Not! Karen Hughes will continue to pound on it being an insult, and not accept any apology. Hughes the apology was not made to you, clueless.

Pickles, I still voted to send you and your husband back to Crawford however. Maybe you can both get reacquainted with the hard work of working the ranch.

6. Seeing them together at the debates
I got the feeling that they do like one another. Teresa's a very warm person and difficult not to like in person. Laura, given her cloistered life in Texas, may even admire Teresa for her worldliness. Before marrying *, Laura loved traveling in Europe and experiencing different cultures. * put a stop to all that foolishness. She may not be a bad person, but I'm disappointed to see her kowtowing to the right wing, and allowing herself to be trotted out to campaign against medical research.

8. why do we never hear about
pickle's family? We knew ALL about Jimmy Carter's mother, brother & evangelical sister (who was a democrat) Bill's mother & brother, Hill's mom & dad & brother. Jeebus, we even know Edwards bought his brother a house! Why do we know NOTHING about pickle's family. From what little I've read - her family was/is long time TX Dems....is she an only child? # of siblings? R her parents still living?

14. There has been info out there
especially when Shrub won.

Laura Bush was the only child of a Midland Texas couple. Her father had a construction business, & he died not long ago of Alzheimers.
I read the family was middle class comfortable, but not rich.

10. Good God in Heaven!!! Can this be America? Gracious behavior! I'm stunned!
Neither of these ladies is fit to be in American political life. This is the kind of decency, graciousness and decorum reserved for civilized nations only.

12. I agree
A very gracious comment. Would that her husband's campaign could emulate it. Hmm, a more cynical person might see some "good cop, bad cop" thing going down here.

When I first heard about Mrs. Kerry's comments and the Bush campaign/White House reaction, I thought she must have made some dismissive "Laura Bush has never worked a day in her life" remarks. But if you read what she said, it was more in the context of them having different life experiences. It was definitely not a diss of stay-at-home moms.

23. Exactly
THK was wise to apologize for any misunderstandings, though. Laura Bush's* reply was classier than I expected. Wish the rest of the people in politics would behave with as much decorum (as well as all those in the media, who are just as bad, these days).

spoken and grounded and smart, a really impressive woman who stands up for what is right and gives attention to the wrongs in the world so she can do something about them. And she does. Out of all the Bushes, I'd say Pickles is the best of a bad bunch.

11. What about the woman who was arrested after a Pickles event,
the one who lost her son in Iraq?

Was Pickles aware of the arrest? Or, did she take a let-them-eat-cake attitude?

I know the charges were dropped later.

Where did that happen again?

Shouldn't Pickles have apologized for this misunderstanding and the arrest of a grieving mother?

Why isn't this story being coupled with the THK story?

15. I think if it was up to the women, it would be a different campaign
I think Teresa meant NOTHING offensive by her remarks, & I think Laura Bush realized that.

These women are in a tough position; every word they utter is scrutinized. Neither one makes policy, but of course they have opinions. They are living in a goldfish bowl, & I do not think either one of them would have chosen this life.

John Kerry s recent interview in Rolling Stone tells how he is surprised by the intensity of the campaign, & the intrusion.

THK and Laura Bush were both gracious: Teresa apologized, and Laura said it wasn't necessary.

Karen Hughes aims her pistols at Teresa.

Seriously, what other response could Laura have had without appearing pathetic?

22. I don't buy it. This is the same thing * did after they claimed
Clinton trashed the WH. The goons fabricated the story, made a big deal out of it-demanded an investigation-and Bush got to come across as gracious by saying he did not want to talk about it. I'm sorry, but I don't trust anything these people do.

who's pushing this more than Laura. Hughes should go back where she came from and spend time w/ her family as she said.
