CNN: New Poll shows College Students moving toward Kerry, plan on voting..

College students say they are much more interested in politics this year, more likely to identify with a party and more likely to vote, a new Harvard University study shows.

And it appears a majority of those responding to the survey intend to vote for Sen. John Kerry.

snip-

The 10-point lead that Kerry held over President Bush in a March survey has grown to 13 percent.

While Bush's support among students has remained consistent, many undecided voters have moved into the Kerry camp.

In swing states, Kerry's lead is even higher, about 16 percent. Swing-state students also are saying they are more likely to vote than students in non-swing states.

Women are far more likely to support Kerry. The race is about even among males.

With less than two weeks until the election? Was the past YEAR of campaigning not enough?

..draft and war anxiety...student loan availability....jobs forecasts..Like I said...by the appointed date, more and more folks are going to be looking at their own lives and their own needs and saying so how am I doing? How is my family doing? My friends?...

14. I just emailed this article to judy fluff-n-stuff.
There's another thread on how judy is saying Kerry is "losing everywhere." She'll ignore this article too, just like she ignores all the other facts, but I feel better having sent it her way.

16. Let's just hope they GET to vote..
College twons often do not consider the students as "residents". In 2000, there were lots of college kids who were allowed to "register", and then found out when they went to vote, that they were NOT registered after all, because they were considered to be residents of their "home state"..By the time they learned this...on election day.. it was too late for them to vote ANYWHERE..

I hope they have all checked and made sure they will be able to vote :)

17. 13 percent?

Jesus. That means that something on the order of a third of college students support Bush. that's amazing to me.

20. Talking with my students today -- they are NOT voting...
Edited on Thu Oct-21-04 04:27 PM by DrZeeLit
...and I was really pissed off. They have so many excuses. I was blown away. They say "I don't believe either of the candidates." I say, "read up!" The say, "Too much trouble." I say, "Draft!" They say, "I don't believe it. Bush said he wouldn't." I say, "You believe Bush?" They say, "Kerry said no draft, too." I say, "Kerry fought. He ought to know."

Then one girl muttered, "Vote for Kerry and they're gonna blow up the country." Barely audible. I almost went ballastic. Then she said, "That's just what they're all saying around here. I'm not gonna vote anyway. I don't know anything about all this."

Since at least four women said they weren't going to vote, I got onto the "women died for your right to vote and you're not going to vote?" They were plainly not going to vote. They thought I was working too hard to convince them.

At least 2 of the 20 sitting in that class are not even registered.
Oi.

One ray of sunshine... two of my students went to a speech by Bernie Sanders (our wonderful Vt Rep) and loved his energy and are going to volunteer for his campaign. At least that's 2 of 20 that are involved and engaged in their education. Not enough.

All the children are being left behind -- they can't even think for themselves. I get depressed thinking who is gonna be left to carry on??

I seriously hope that it doesn't take a draft to get the message that this "election/voting stuff" is important.

Oi. Oi. Oi.

22. That is sad to hear
Why don't you assign the movie "Iron Jawed Angels" for your class? Might change a few minds.

My grandmother was 35 before she was able to vote for the first time. I pounded it in my daughter's head early on about the importance of voting. When she turned 18, I escorted her to our polling place (it was for a primary) and got her registered and she voted. She was happy to do it and said it felt good.

21. This is how Jesse Ventura got elected in Minnesota
Jesse was polling in THIRD place the day of his election but a vast number of first-time voting young people showed up at the polls and he got elected. No one expected it because these kids didn't show up on any polls.

Just hearing this gives me great hope because I've seen it happen before!
