Whitmire says redistricting will be debated in Austin

HEAR IT NOW

John Whitmire had already spent weeks pacing the halls of the Albuquerque Marriott like a caged tiger when reality set in.

A federal court would likely rule against him and 10 other Texas state senators on the lam in New Mexico and the U.S. Justice Department would probably work against their attempts to stall a Republican redistricting effort, the Houston Democrat thought.

As the hotel walls grew more confining, the options of returning to Texas to deliberately get arrested or convincing 51 House members to take a 30-day out-of-state stint seemed increasingly remote.

Whitmire decided it was time to go home

Actually it isn't over from what I hear
Its the reason Perry hasn't called the Third Session Yet!
Whitmire SOLD OUT! :bounce:

But I believe there are others that haven't!

1. huh?
A federal court would likely rule against him and 10 other Texas state senators on the lam in New Mexico and the U.S. Justice Department would probably work against their attempts to stall a Republican redistricting effort, the Houston Democrat thought.

so the article says that because Whitmire "thought" he would "probably" lose, he decided to just give up??? doesn't this guy remember the Alamo???

3. VERY IMPORTANT - Whitmire may be a plant...
I posted this in another thread about Whitmire, but it seems to have been ignored. I think this is very important to understanding why Whitmire is giving in:

And speaking of the new Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst did show up for a fund raiser for the new Dean of the Texas Senate, John Whitmire. Dewhurst went out of his way to talk about a nonpartisan approach to running the Texas Senate and his remarks were well received by the large audience and by Senator Whitmire.

Senator Whitmire, a Democrat, is with the law firm of Locke Liddell and Sapp a firm which picked most of the statewide Republicans too win and therefore has become a very hot lobbying firm in Austin. It was well regarded anyway but its relationships with the Gov., Lt. Gov., Speaker and AG will mean that it moves up in the list of well-connected law firms.

Tell me if I am just being paranoid, but isn't it just a little suspicious that the man who might break the back of the Texas Dems happens to work for a law firm that is a "very hot lobbying firm" with close ties to the Texas Republicans?

Am I the only one who thinks it's strange that Dewhurst attended a fundraiser for Whitmire?
