Sex overload : Companies find erotic ad campaigns (RMN)
no longer titillate consumers

By Matthew Lynn
November 13, 2004

snip>

Are you shocked by companies using slogans that rely on sexual innuendo to sell their products? Or disturbed by pictures of semiclad models being used to promote ranges of clothing?

Like many of us, you probably just find the constant barrage of sexual imagery in advertising is starting to wash over you.

Sex, it appears, doesn't sell like it used to.

This year, a British firm, HeadlightVision Ltd. - a unit of the world's second-largest advertising company, WPP Group - produced a study showing the saturation of sexual imagery in advertising had become a turnoff for young consumers. Based on research in 14 cities around the world, including New York and London, it concluded that young urban consumers were tired of sexual explicitness in advertising.

15. not as long as the Business Right is using the Religious Right
The Business Right knows that as long as it supports politicians who are anti-abortion and anti-gay, that the Religious Right will let them get away with ANYTHING else.

And I mean anything. Murder, voter fraud, whatever.

2. Because they are getting some.
It ain't 1950 anymore.

If they could make happiness and world peace into a graphic, that might work (it worked for Coca Cola)

7.  LOL...how about the ED drug ads (Viagra, et al) that sell sex itself?
I think they're hysterically funny...my husband and I MST3K them...
for instance, when the wife is gazing lovingly at the husband, we say things like "Thank GOD you can finally get it up!" MKJ

10. The distinction between the erotic and the pornographic is lost on some
FCUK is not erotic. It's dislexic for "We're a Fucked Up Company." If I walked up to somebody and said "Fuck," that would be a turn on? Even if I said it in my most seductive make-you-think-I-was-Barry-White voice?

Maybe there's more skin, more naughty bits, and more in-your-face presentation than there was decades ago, I don't know. But I doubt that there's been any great increase in erotic imagery used in advertising. Hirst seems to confuse the shock-value of nudity with sexiness. It really is an issue of quality.

11. Scantily clad fake and airbrushed bodies are certainly not sexy..
To me, humor with a touch of sly suggestiveness is sexy...and requires a subtlety no ad agency seems close to comprehending. MKJ

13. I feel sorry for the women who have invested in breast enlargements...
if they go out of fashion. Just like politics the pendulum will soon swing the other way.

23. Am I "shocked" by "sexual innuendo"? Is this a "pop" quiz?
Mind you, only to the extent that every time I see a train entering a tunnel, I break out in a flash sweat. ;-)

Jesus fuck, these puritans drive me crazy. I do hope kool-aid drinking becomes popular in the weirder sects again soon.
