Protesters in city decry Bush's policies
War, social inequity are top issues
By Erikah Haavie
Poughkeepsie Journal

Kathy McLaughlin/Journal
Carol Sullivan of the City of Poughkeepsie joins a group of protesters Friday near Poughkeepsie City Hall.
Holding signs and singing songs, about 30 local college students and community members gathered in the snow Friday to speak out against President Bush and the war in Iraq.
Students from Vassar, Bard and Marist colleges and the State University of New York at New Paltz were among those participating in the protest, held on the street corners in front of Poughkeepsie City Hall.

Max Shmookler, 21, a junior at Vassar College, said the issues are not only global, but local.

Students want an end to the war, but they also want social justice for the poor.

''This community needs money,'' Shmookler said. ''We don't want to see that money going abroad to fight unjust wars.''

6. The tanks where for a veterans day show, but they got lost
Anyways, if we spend 600 billion dollars on our military, how come they can't afford maps?

4. A demonstration in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada today too
I would say about 200 people there. Joe MacDonald (Country Joe and the Fish fame) did about 5 songs. 1, 2, 3, what are we fighting for... Odd how things come around again.

5. Wasn't that Bush who picked his feet in Poughkeepsie?
