Deputy Secretary of State Armitage Quits -Official
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=domesticNews&storyID=6829599

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage has resigned as expected a day after his boss and close friend, Colin Powell, announced he was stepping down, a State Department official said on Tuesday.

Armitage, a barrel-chested former Navy officer who closely managed the day-to-day operations of the State Department's worldwide bureaucracy, tendered his resignation to Powell on Monday, the official said.

2. Armitage resignation
Can anyone tell me...do we know...have these key Republican resignations like Armitage been because Bush requested the men to resign or are they getting out because they can't bear the direction the GOP is taking? This would be the difference between a purge and the men saying Screw you, which is a big difference.

The MSM seems to be saying the exodus from the CIA is a purge. I think it's a You can't fire me, I quit situation.

What do you-all think?

3. Party purge
The right always marginalizes itself by purging those it considers less than ideologically pure.

8. Armitage supposedly used to be an assassin for the CIA.
He certainly looks like he'd have no trouble in throttling somebody with a piano wire...

Is he really that muscular or is he wearing some sort of truss?

5. No one can be surprised at this

I just wonder how many MORE books will be written now.

Hopefully at least one where the gloves come off.

6. I think Powell was fired
Armitage let it be known that if Powell left, he was right behind him.

Powell said he and Bush "came to an agreement" about his resignation and stated he would stay on until someone else was appointed...2 weeks or 2 months. Then 2 hours later Condi's name was out there.

Colin Powell....what a legacy. The first African American that could have been president will be remembered for his lies to the UN.

Sad.

9. Powell fired/quit
Powell let it be known months ago that he was leaving no matter how the election turned out. And yet, we keep hearing that he and Bush agreed he would leave now that Bush has a second term. Ergo...he wasn't asked to stay on...that's tantamount to being fired. It's hard to believe that Powell could have been talked into staying on if that's what Bush wanted. He hated the man.

But he was, first and foremost, "a good soldier". What an onerous epithet. A good soldier does whatever his commander asks--he lies, cheats and falls on his sword.

We have heard that when Powell was rehearsing his UN speech he said, "I can't say this shit". He changed some of the more outrageous lines a bit. But he did go on to say what the administration wanted him to say.

I hope this good soldier does indeed fade away and doesn't try to re-enter the political scene. He has lost all credibility and the trust of most of the country..it needn't have been that way, but he made his own choices.

10. Armitage did as much -- maybe when their books are published we'll learn
more....more than Paul O'Neill revealed about the price of loyalty.
