A column for your enjoyment
The Truth You Can’t Handle
By Dissident

This is not America
Dateline: February 2, 2006

The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from all the oligarchies of the past, in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives.
-Nineteen Eighty Four

The title of today’s exploration is from a David Bowie song which was attached to the 80’s motion picture “The Falcon and the Snowman”. The film is a true story about a CIA employee and his friend sold sensitive intelligence materials to the Soviet Union. This article has nothing to do with that movie except its soundtrack and the fact that I have a growing fear that we as a country are living in a state similar to our former comrades in the U.S.S.R.

Our fearless leader, Curious George W Bush gave the State of the Union address two days past and I sit here reflecting on the events of that day and the content of the speech of our indisputably poll weary President. I don’t know from any coverage other than CNN’s that night but there’s a little pre-speech incident that took place that you might have missed.

Cindy Sheehan, the activist mother of an American soldier killed in Iraq was invited to attend the speech by a Democratic lawmaker. Shortly before the speech and nearly as soon as she was seated Cindy was approached and escorted out and later arrested for apparently causing an unlawful disruption or they had reason to believe she was going to CNN wasn’t quite clear on their facts (imagine that). Yes kids, and please write this down, “reason to believe” is now probable cause for you to be arrested. Here I thought it was just a Rod Stewart song. But I digress. Initial reports from administration fan and barely unbiased anchor Wolf Blitzer were that Cindy was preparing to unfurl some kind of protest banner and that’s why she was arrested as that is against House chamber rules. Fair enough. Later after dangerous dissenter Cindy had been properly kept out of our Majesty’s sight for over an hour, she was released and all charges were dropped. Why you ask? Anyone that breaks House chambers rules deserves to be arrested. We live in a country where we value our rule of law right? Cindy was completely wrong to bring a banner in past the tightest security in the world and she should be charged accordingly I don’t care if she is a dead soldier’s mother.

Wait a minute. How did Cindy get an anti war banner through the tightest security in the world and not get charged for it?
Because it just so happens that Cindy had no banner. The extent of Cindy’s dissent that night was to enter the House chambers with the shirt on her back. The one she had been wearing all day. A shirt with a single number on it. The number of Iraq war dead up to that point. Cindy spends a lot of time updating it when she needs to. Almost every day. I suppose Cindy could have missed the memo about the dress code for the SOTU address perhaps the member of Congress that invited her should have told her that King George doesn’t like to be reminded of the cost of his war. Although he does know how to work them as was demonstrated by him trotting out a family who seemed happy that their son died for George’s noble cause to thunderous standing applause. Cindy’s son died for your cause too George and you won’t even meet with her. To tangent a bit further I just need to say, that event and him using a tribute to the recently deceased Coretta Scott King to kick off his speech were among the vilest of many vile acts I’ve seen this man commit publicly.

But this column isn’t about how much I love our fearless leader. It’s about A woman using her right to express herself through her clothing being marched away from the public eye so no one might be revealed the fact that not only does the Emperor not have any clothes but that he’s been touching us in our private places without consent for quite some time now.
This is not America. Not the one I grew up in. This is the fearful realm of the Soviet Union I was taught to dread like Satan himself in the 70’s and 80’s. My parents lived through the madness of McCarthy and the newly emerging nuclear arms race. I was told that Russia was a totalitarian dictatorship because you couldn’t speak your mind without fear of reprisal. That one thing scared me above all others. That one right, expression is so vital to being a human being that without it we are only shells and slaves to higher powers. To hide the truth, to squash expression and the right to dissent is the stuff of a fascist regime pure and simple. I would never advocate allowing large protesting mobs into official government functions. Again we are a country bound by laws. This was a T-shirt. This was one woman wearing something that God forbid might remind our assembled lawmakers that it is real human lives that thrive or fall, that live or die, from their actions. What more basic right as citizens should we have than to remind them of that and I defy you to find anyone more qualified to remind them than Cindy Sheehan.
The crowds are again cheering our leader as they did another in Berlin in the first half of our 20th century. We are taught to fear the enemy (whoever they say he is) and trust our leader to protect us despite overwhelming evidence that all that’s been done since 9/11 to protect us has been the cartel reminding us how safe the Iraq war is keeping us. I keep asking myself why immediately following 9/11 were we told we should change nothing about our country, our daily lives and our liberties or else the terrorists have won. 4 years hence all we hear is “9/11 changed everything”. I guess you declared “mission accomplished” for the terrorists right there George.
The writing is on the wall. The pieces are in place on the board. Checkmate is nearly inevitable. No more dissent will be allowed while the leader entertains. You must trust him. Thought crime will get you executed. The Dream police are inside of my head and WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.
Ignore me at your peril
