You have to hope that, if James E. Hansen was listening to the State of the Union Address Tuesday night, he has a well-developed sense of irony.

It would take that, and more, to sit through President Bush's call for more federal support for scientific research and science education.

Hansen, who directs NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, is one of the leading authority's anywhere on the Earth's climate system. He's also the guy who, according to a detailed story in the New York Times last weekend, Bush's administration is trying to muzzle because of his warnings about global warming.
