US Media at 'All-Time Low'
http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,1700692,00.html

Last night CBS News in their series looking at the media cited a CBS News/New York Times poll that said that 63% (or somesuch number) of the American people believed that media present an accurate picture of what's going on. I wonder if some other polling organization would get the same results. It's kind of like "our pollsters say we're doing great."

1. They are being hit from all sides.
The left and right both blast them. So they put out a press release with some bogus poll saying they are accepted and trusted.

In reality, the biggest reason they are being sucked down the drain is the number of forums like this one, blogs, and free news sources online. There is so much information out here that the old media has become dinosaurs.

2. Welcome to DU, Luke21!
There is so much information out here that the old media has become dinosaurs.

That's true, of course, but part of the old media's problem is that they pick the hot-sell stories out of any given pile and pump those through the roof. If they'd concentrate on actual news of importance (rather than "runaway brides" and other bullshit) then they'd stand a chance of holding their own against blogs and other new media sources.

3. welcome!
well read people have an inkling going into the daily newspaper or nightly new that things are more off kilter than what is presented.

the internet presnts just one aspect that maybe -- just maybe -- there are americans reading stuff that the ''media''{entertainment industry} doesn't want to think about.

then there's that huge segment of the population who just have lost faith with all sorts of the major institutions.

from science and religion to city hall and washington dc.

there lives just aren't working quite right and they aren't sure why -- but they sure as hell know they are not seeing it on the nightly news.

4. They are shit on a shingle
Anyone with half a brain knows they're an extension of corporate America.

They spend most of their time and attention
ignoring real News in favor of shit fluff stories.
