Under the Radar

CORRUPTION -- DID THE WHITE HOUSE INSTRUCT PRIVATE PHOTOGRAPHER TO SCRUB BUSH-ABRAMOFF PICTURES?

Two weeks ago, The Hill columnist and blogger Josh Marshall reported that Reflections Photography, a large studio frequently hired to photograph conservative political events, had removed from its database all photos showing President Bush with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Marshall had unsuccessfully attempted to purchase such a photo from Reflections, and called the studio's president Joanne Amos to ask why the pictures were no longer available. She "very straightforwardly told me that the photographs had been removed and that they had been removed because they showed Abramoff and the president in the same picture. The photos were, she told me, 'not relevant.'" During a briefing yesterday, White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan was asked whether the White House had instructed Reflections to remove the photos. McClellan "declined to answer the question."

McClellan reading TPM, but not that closely?

From today's press briefing (emphasis added) ........

Q Scott, there have been various reports that photographs of the President with Jack Abramoff have disappeared from the archives of photographic studios, at least one. Could you tell us whether the White House or anyone working at the White House's behest has taken any steps to remove any photographs that the President --

MR. McCLELLAN: I don't know anything about that. I think that I saw some story where the very company that you're mentioning said otherwise. So I think you ought to see what they said.

Q They acknowledged that the photographs had disappeared from their work site.

MR. McCLELLAN: I think they said something other than that...........

2. Scotty Answered As Follows:......
A guy named Winston in the The Ministry of Truth or Minitrue, in Bushspeak dealt with each of the photos, he culled them from the files and dropped them into the memory hole to be devoured by the flames. He substituted photo op pictures complementary to Bush and pushed them into the pneumatic tube system.

What happened in the unseen labyrinth to which the pneumatic tubes led, he did not know in detail, but he did know in general terms. As soon as all the corrections which happened to be necessary in any particular number of The Times had been assembled and collated, that number would be reprinted, the original copy destroyed, and the corrected copy placed on the files in its stead.

This process of continuous alteration was applied not only to Bush photos, but to books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, leaflets, films, sound-tracks, cartoons, newspapers -- to every kind of literature or documentation which might conceivably hold any political or ideological significance or portray Bush in a bad way.

Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the BushCo could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct, nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary. In no case would it have been possible, once the deed was done, to prove that any falsification had taken place.
