EUROPE'S future may hinge on the outcome of the Danish cartoon affair. It has long seemed almost inevitable that either Islam would be Europeanized or Europe would be Islamized. The European reaction to date suggests that the latter seems more likely.

The furor first began last September, when the center-right Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten ran 12 cartoons (one of which depicted Mohammed with a bomb as his turban), prompting angry demonstrations and small-scale rioting.

Those initial protests may have been spontaneous — but the recent demonstrations calling for death to the cartoonists (who are now in hiding because of death threats) were anything but. The campaign in the last two weeks to bully tiny Denmark has been funded by the Saudis and other Arab governments.

Raed Hlayhel, an imam who lives in Denmark, was part of an entourage of clerics that toured the Middle East to gin up the anti-Danish campaign. It appears that, in addition to the 12 cartoons that ran in the Jyllands-Posten, Hlayhel and the other imams fabricated several other cartoons, including one depicting Mohammed as a pedophile and another showing him having sex with a dog. These "extra" cartoons seemed to be what spurred the current, well-organized rage.

At least the lines have now been draw so clearly that only fools, knaves, cowards, Eurocrats and appeasers can deny the obvious.

He claims Muslims are poised to take control of public discourse in Europe. They're less than 5% of the population, are poorer than average, and suffer racial discrimination. They do not have significant influence. His picture is highly distorted.

According to the supreme religious leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the cartoons were published as part of a "conspiracy by Zionists who were angry because of the victory of Hamas" in the Palestinian elections.

Since the cartoons were published in the Jyllands-Posten back in September, that leaves only one possible conclusion.

(1) I support the First Amendment
