What has happened to America's Jesus?

I remember when Jesus Christ was about religion.

That goes back to when he was caring and compassionate all the time, not just during the political campaign season.

He used to bring people together and give them hope. He wouldn't have his people get in your face and tell you to fight gay rights or you'll burn in hell. That's not what he was about. That's not the Jesus who made folks such as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson rich and famous. He was a different guy from the 21st-century American Jesus Christ.

When I recently visited Sicily, Italy, the old Jesus was all over the place. His statue was on the counter at the restaurant and the coffee house. His image was on the wall at the clothing store and in the hotel lobby. And there was a huge painting of him on the side of an apartment building.

1. He's gotten a buzz cut, added 20 lbs of muscle and is on the "juice"

Jesus juice, that is.

He's bulked up quite a lot and is a bit testy now that he can throw his weight around.

Since the meek will inherit the earth, he's just kicking people off his property.

And he's all about sticking his nose into your sex life because he hasn't come in over 2,000 years.

3. He's ultimate power and authority

to people who care about aligning themselves with that sort of thing.

The sad part is that people who "hide" behind WWJD (and get it wrong) don't really care whether it's good or bad, moral or immoral, etc. Anything goes as long as a "higher power" makes it so.

Gives me a headache. So stoning people to death for eating shellfish (you know, that immoral shellfish "lifestyle") is bad, but stoning them to death for how they get their rocks off is good.

and became palatable to the rich and powerful and to the powerless who know they'll stay powerless but enjoy the fact that they've been given divine permission to hate the rest of us who are also powerless.
