Daniel Pipes and the Danish Editor (John Sugg)
Daniel Pipes and the Danish Editor
By JOHN SUGG

<snip>
So, let’s look at the guy who started this whole cartoon escapade. He’s Flemming Rose, the cultural editor of the Danish newspaper. In all of the Lexis-Nexis database of stories from the American media on the Mohammed cartoons, there is absolutely no mention of the fact that Rose is a close confederate of arch-Islamophobe Daniel Pipes. Indeed, there is almost no context at all about Rose’s newspaper. On a brief mention in the Washington Post gave a hint at a fact desperately needed to understand the situation. The Post described the affair as “a calculated insult … by a right-wing newspaper in a country where bigotry toward the minority Muslim population is a major, if frequently unacknowledged, problem.”

How bad is Pipes? He wants the utter military obliteration of the Palestinians; indeed, from the Muslim world, his racism is about as blatant as that of the Holocaust denying Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Pipes’ frequent outbursts of racism -- designed to toss gasoline on the neo-cons’ lust for a wholesale conflict of cultures -- earned him a Bush nomination to the U.S. Institute of Peace, a congressionally funded think tank. Rose came to America to commune with Pipes in 2004, and it was after that meeting the cartoon gambit materialized. <snip>

Pipes is amazing. I saw him on AJ (C-SPAN) last week and he refused to engage with any caller that wasn't in complete accord with his own dementia. It's frightening that people like him and Ledeen and Gaffney are hovering around the current admin.
Save us from the 'true believers'. It's like they'll do anything because they know they're right.

2. Pipes can go to hell
Just hearing him speak on CSpan one morning motivated me to get involved with the Arab American Institute run by Dr. James Zogby. I've never seen such an intellectual bigot on the scale of Daniel Pipes.

In a letter to the NY Post, Dr. Zogby best describes Mr. Pipes' viewpoint on Islam.

"Daniel Pipes has a problem—his obsessive hatred of all things Muslim. In an article many years ago, Pipes accused Arabs and Muslims of being obsessed with Jews. In fact, it is Pipes who goes to bed at night and wakes up in the morning worried about the Muslim under his bed and all things Arab.

"It used to be said that an anti-Semite was someone who would say ‘some of my best friends are Jews’ because what the anti-Semite feared was not individual Jews but organized Jewry. While Pipes will acknowledge a ‘good Muslim’ here or there he has never met a Muslim organization, institution or mosque that he does not fear or revile. Even efforts to simply explain the religion are subject to his wrath.

<snip>

"Pipes is to Muslims what David Duke is to African Americans. Thank goodness the Post does not employ Duke as a columnist. One bigot is enough."

President Bush used a "recess appointment" to put Mr. Pipes on the US Institute of Peace.

4. Expression creep.
Rose started out as interviewing Pipes and reporting his views, then as sympathetically interviewing Pipes and presenting his views in the best possible light. Now he's a close confederate. By the end of next week, he'll be Pipes student and acolyte, and the week after that, his lover. All with no new info coming to light, of course.

5. Interesting thread from KOS
Denmark's Lurch to the Far Right by Kossack aruac

The links between Flemming Rose -- the Culture editor of Jyllands-Posten who commissioned and published the "Mohammed the Terrorist" cartoons --- and the neo-cons in the United States --- in particular the toxic figure of Daniel Pipes, who thinks it might be a good idea to incarcarate pre-emptively Moslems in this country-- have already been well exposed. See inter alia:

Today there is a fascinating article in The Guardian
which charts the background to all of this, which is the emergence of far-right xenophobic and Islamophobic politics in Denmark over the last decade
