Lieberman, Bush `Smooch' Conveys Connecticut Democrats' Unrest

(Bloomberg) -- It was just a kiss on the cheek. Now Joe Lieberman's ``smooch'' from President George W. Bush may become a symbol of the first Democratic effort to unseat the party's three-term senator.

A campaign button depicting the embrace, which took place after last year's State of the Union address, is circulating among a group of Democrats attempting to organize a primary challenge to the 63-year-old Lieberman. Their complaint: he is too close to Bush, especially on the Iraq war.

``That kiss was like jumping in the president's pocket,'' said Ted Cummings, who has been chairman of the Manchester Democratic Town Committee since 1961. ``Some things you just don't do, brother. You draw back when the president wants to give you a big smooch.''

Cummings is one of several local Democratic power brokers being wooed by Ned Lamont, a 52-year-old Greenwich businessman and war critic who says he is ``90 percent'' sure he will enter the August primary. While Lamont would be a long shot, a Lieberman challenge may expose deepening party divisions over the war and attract support from national Democratic groups uneasy about Lieberman.

3. Not exactly
I have one of the buttons -- I wish I could reproduce it here, but unfortunately I'm not able.

The photo was probably taken immediately before or after -- neither man is smiling, and their lips are almost touching.

Very romantic!

4. the kiss in and of itself is nothing, its the complicity of his actions
with the republicans that is more damning. They trot him out as their pet token democrat in every function where they wish to appear "bipartisan". meanwhile he shills and defends the administration, even to the point of attacking other democrats when necessary, he was at Laura's private valentine's day dance, for god sakes.

I think Joementum is who they turned to when they realized Zell Miller was too obvious.

9. It's not this single kiss that is bothersome but his constant kissing of
Bush's and Repuke behinds and attacking Dems who behave like Dems on Faux News.

Lieberman's social voting record is deceptive, especially within the last 6 years. Example: his votes on the bankruptcy bill may make Vote Smart to rate him as progressive, but the vote that counted, the cloture vote, Lieberman voted with the Repukes because he knew full well that when that bill hit the floor, it would pass. That is how Lieberman pays off his corporate donors and pretends to be a Democrat.

10. Lieberman could be a "hold and release" moderate republican
the so-called moderate Republicans are "held" to vote the party line until they are sure they have more than enough votes to pass, then the moderates are "released" to appear as mavericks since their vote won't change the outcome.

Lieberman is likely a DLC version of the same thing. He votes progressive often enough to give himself cover, but in the clinch, he votes for the money people.
