What people are saying about the hunting accident:
Las Vegas Review-Journal, in an editorial: "The behavior of the attack dogs of the Washington press corps in response to this news ... confirmed many of the worst impressions of that profession long held among those who live outside the Boston-to-Washington Amtrak corridor. 'Has the vice president resigned or is he planning to resign?' one reporter asked. 'Does the vice president plan to stop hunting?' Others compared the one-day delay before they were advised of the accident to famous coverups of the past. It was a weekend. Should the vice president have dialed the home numbers of various New York Times columnists before an ambulance was summoned? ... One component in the overreaction of the Washington press corps is doubtless attributable to the fact that few in that profession today any longer belong to a culture in which hunting and fishing are considered normal pastimes for adults. ... The impression the press corps gave was not that they were concerned for all involved. ... The scene more closely resembled a tank full of sharks smelling blood."
The Capital Times,
Madison, Wis., in an editorial: "Sure, it's been fun joking about the fact that Dick Cheney obtained ... five deferments to avoid serving in the military. ... Now that the vice president has accidentally shot and wounded a companion on a quail hunt at an elite Texas ranch where rich men play with guns, spraying his 78-year-old victim, er, friend, in the face and chest with shotgun pellets and sending the man to the intensive care unit of a Corpus Christi (Texas) hospital, it has become clear that Cheney was doing the country a service when he avoided service. ... U.S. troops had enough problems in Vietnam without letting a trigger-happy incompetent like Dick Cheney start shooting things up from behind the lines. Those deferments were well and wisely issued."
The Times,
Trenton, N.J., editorial: "The Bush administration and Vice President Dick Cheney's pals say Cheney wasn't to blame for accidentally shooting a quail-hunting companion in Texas Saturday afternoon. The fault, they say, lay with the victim, who, fortunately, was not gravely wounded, although he suffered what was described as a mild heart attack. But who's surprised? This administration, with its vice president calling the shots much of the time, has probably made more bad decisions than any White House team in U.S. history - and never admitted to any of them. It is one of the delicious ironies of the case that Cheney's pose as victim, not perpetrator, has been shot down by the very gun lobby to which this administration and its Republican allies in Congress have been subservient for five years."....
