Several great ones in here.
Editor, Times-Dispatch: It's a zany world to which Senator George Allen invites us. He criticizes his challenger for suggesting we include Syria in diplomatic peace efforts in the Mideast. He supports President Bush on terror -- which includes turning over a citizen of Canada, who was in our custody, to Syrian authorities for 10 months of torture.
We can't work with the Syrians for peace, but we can work with them for torture.

First we've got those nonstop, shifting apologies for calling S.R. Sidarth "macaca," finally settling on the extraordinary avowal (on "Meet the Press") that the word was "just made up," and he wouldn't have used it if he thought it was a slur, because "it's not who I am."
But if that's not who he is, which Allen is it who opposed a state holiday for Martin Luther King Jr., proclaimed Confederate History and Heritage Month, had a Confederate flag in his living room, a noose in his law office, a picture of Confederate troops in his governor's office, and stated that affirmative action was "state-sponsored racism"?
And with such a track record, which Allen is it who wishes he had learned "earlier" that the Confederate flag represents to African-Americans "repression, segregation, and violence against them"? (How much earlier? Before he ran for congressman, governor, and senator in a state where these things matter?)
And which Allen is it who hadn't made up his mind to support Bush's plan on using torture but affirms that "what the interrogators are doing now is completely fine" with him?
And, finally, which Allen wants to be Virginia's senator for the next six years, but doesn't answer the question of whether he will serve our state for that long if elected?
It looks as if Allen himself has finally shown us who the real George Allen is. Howard Shiflett. richmond.
