Republicans try scare tactic
Trailing in polls, party runs TV ad starring bin Laden

Not the first time terror threat used in bid to sway vote
Oct. 23, 2006. 05:32 AM
TIM HARPER
WASHINGTON BUREAU CHIEF

PHILADELPHIA—
"The Republicans still can't find Osama bin Laden, but they know how to showcase him.

Without a spoken word, but with the skilful use of a ticking time bomb, the governing party has brought fear back into the U.S. congressional election campaign, with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer blow to the solar plexus.

Pictures of Al Qaeda's bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri, and fadeout images of their most terrifying words, are featured in a television ad produced by the Republican National Committee. The ad began a limited run on U.S. cable networks yesterday.

Some are calling this a Republican Hail Mary, with polls showing Democrats poised to retake the House of Representatives and perhaps even the Senate in the Nov. 7 midterm elections.

.................SNIP"
