Enough with the Hillary -- she deserves to be called Sen. Clinton
By SUSAN PAYNTER
P-I COLUMNIST

Words are a lot like underwear. They can be embarrassing and revealing.

So, while not exactly a Valentine, please consider these words a loving nudge, a helpful primer, or a map for picking our way across the historic, uncharted territory we now are exploring with the first genuinely competitive female candidate for president.

....

So, in the poetic spirit of the day, may I gently say this to perplexed TV news pundits and political columnists whose verbal circuits seem to be so jammed by this prospect:

"She has a last name, like Edwards, Obama,
For title try Senator, not Mrs. Or Mama."

1. I agree!!!
"Hillary" is too much like "Cher" or "Madonna." She deserves more respect & should be addressed as Sen. Clinton.

2. a lot like underwear: yeah them IWR skidmarks
on Clinton's are a total embarrassment.

By the way, I generally refer to Clinton as Clinton. The use of Hillary is in fact demeaning.

3. While that is her title in the Senate ...
Her campaign signs say "Hillary", which seems to imply that what she wants to be called during her candidacy.

4. It's what Wikipedia calls disambiguation
I tend to call her Hillary to distinguish her from Bill. "Clinton" could mean either. Is it disrespectful to Bush to call him Dubya in order to distinguish him from his father? His supporters don't seem to think so.

5. I was not aware that the ex president ever went by "Senator"
It seems to me that Senator Clinton is sufficiently unambiguous.

7. So is Obama addressed as "Senator Obama"?
Come on...if Hillary's campaign calls her Hillary is it disrespectful for everyone else to call her by that name?

Calling her Hillary shows a distinction between her and President Clinton. It could be worse. People could address her as "Mrs Bill Clinton!" That would ruffle some feathers big time!

Maybe we should come up with a new name for Hillary. How about "H. Rodham Clinton" or maybe "H. Rodham" This could work! Not only does it eliminate the dreaded godawful disrespectful name Hillary that some of her supporters are ashamed of for some reason, it also further distances her name linguistically from President Clinton. And we wouldn't want any associations with Bill....right?

9. OK...this says it all....
"She has a last name, like Edwards, Obama,
For title try Senator, not Mrs. Or Mama."

Both Edwards and Obama could be addressed with the title of "Senator". So here we have someone NOT addressing two other Senators as "Senator" but getting upset that Hillary Rodham Clinton is not addressed as "Senator Clinton".

Enough of this whining already!

Is that what we would look forward to if she were to be elected....whining at every slightest imagined criticism, even calling her by her name? We already have an administration who is touchy about criticism, why do we need another with the same trait?
