Bush Regains His Footing

By David S. Broder
Friday, February 16, 2007; Page A23

It may seem perverse to suggest that, at the very moment the House of Representatives is repudiating his policy in Iraq, President Bush is poised for a political comeback. But don't be astonished if that is the case.

Like President Bill Clinton after the Democrats lost control of Congress in 1994, Bush has gone through a period of wrenching adjustment to his reduced status. But just as Clinton did in the winter of 1995, Bush now shows signs of renewed energy and is regaining the initiative on several fronts.

More important, he is demonstrating political smarts that even his critics have to acknowledge.

His reaction to the planned House vote opposing the increase he ordered in U.S. troops deployed to Iraq illustrates the point.

When Bush faced reporters on Wednesday morning, he knew that virtually all those in the Democratic majority would be joined by a significant minority of Republicans in voting today to decry the "surge"
strategy.

He did three things to diminish the impact of that impending defeat......

1. ..In other respects, too, Bush has been impressive in recent days.

........In other respects, too, Bush has been impressive in recent days.

He has been far more accessible -- and responsive -- to the media and public, holding any number of one-on-one interviews, both on and off the record, leading up to Wednesday's televised news conference. And he has been more candid in his responses than in the past.

2. whistling in the wind, eh david? another version of the "big lie"--tell yourself something often
enough, and it is automatically true?

let's see, clinton was diminished after the '94 election, correct? funny, he still managed to get reelected, by a substantial margin, in 96. bush, on the other hand, is a lame duck, unless, of course, he really thinks he can get away with martial law.

hubris, thy name is the reichwing.

4. With statements like:
"What's worse, they did know or they didn't know" That sure makes me feel like he is a leader of men.

This nation is so fucked.

6. Yeah but what did he come back too?
Is he starting to act like a rational human, hell no. Listening to his speech he struck me as arrogant, cocky and determined to continue this hopeless war no matter what. He blames Iran for killing our soldiers in Iraq (not bushes fault soldiers are dying). He has come back to stay the course, false and manipulated intelligence, and double speak.

7. Here is some of his previous work...
Some of the titles he's (co)authored:

The System: The American Way of Politics at the Breaking Point with Haynes Johnson (Little, Brown and Company, 1996).

The Man Who Would be President: Dan Quayle with Bob Woodward (Simon & Schuster, 1992).

Behind the Front Page: A Candid Look at How the News is Made (Simon & Schuster 1981).

Changing of the Guard: Power and Leadership in America (Simon & Schuster, 1980).

The Party's Over: The Failure of Politics in America (Harper and Row, 1972).

The Republican Establishment: The Present and Future of the G.O.P. with Stephen Hess (Harper and Row, 1967).

The Dan Quayle book:
From Publishers Weekly
Readers will find little here to change perception of Vice President J. Danforth Quayle as a lightweight with a short attention span, a confused sense of history and lacking in "the vision thing." In a reprint of a controversial seven-part series that appeared in the Washington Post , journalists Woodward and Broder describe Quayle's 1976 entry into politics, his contributions as a senator, his aggressive campaign to be picked by George Bush as his 1988 running mate, his ordeal-by-ridicule throughout that campaign and his accomplishments as vice-president. There's an entire chapter on Quayle's golf obsession ("I can't get enough of it!") in which the authors aver that the game is a major part of his life, essential to his psychic balance and a key to understanding him. We're shown that another key is his formidable wife Marilyn, and Woodward and Broder do a fine job describing her role in her husband's career. She comes off as having more substance than he. And she is more interesting to read about in this short but informative book. Photos.

And "Behind the Front Page..."
From Publishers Weekly
Broder, longtime political correspondent for the Washington Post, takes a gentlemanly look at contemporary journalism and comes up with a mild surprise or two. He is impressed, for example, by the way our neighbors to the north handle media coverage of national campaigns and proposes that "catching up with the Canadians" wouldn't be a bad way for our own media to begin improving itself. Unfortunately, he isn't altogether clear on what needs improving. (He admits that he doesn't take seriously the charge of media bias, for one thing.) The book is, for the most part, a sprawling discussion of the way presidential campaigns are covered, the relationship between journalists and public officials in general and , in particular, the relationship between the White House press corps and what he calls "the White House propaganda machine." Major ad/promo; author tour.

Amazon

In spite of his Pulitzer Prize-winning status, he's a bit pre-mature in announcing that Bush is "regaining his footing." He sounds like just another corporate media whore...

10. Even with the MSM blowhards spewing hot air in his sails
The SS Shrub ain't going nowhere. They tried it in 2004, and barely got close enough to steal the election. Since then every "comeback" has been like the feeble stirrings of a diseased squid.

12. Impeach and instead of "Comeback" it'll be "We'll help you pack!"
The tragedy of impeachophobia is that it blinds the victims to realities that are staring them in the face.

Given a choice between "Strong and Wrong" and "Weak and Right" Americans as a body pick "Strong and Wrong."

The Democratic leadership could have chosen the unbeatable combination of "Strong and Right" by impeaching Bush and Cheney.

Instead, they've demonstrated their impotence in the face of the "strong leader." They're being steamrolled. The surge is on. The decider has swatted them off like flies.

Bush and Cheney have proven over and over and over again that Political pressure is not a force they respond to. They rarely go on the defensive, and when they do, they don't stay there. They counter-attack. Every time they steamroll the Dems, the Dems confirm the perception that they are weak, and they come out as the strong ones. Until the Dems show up with a loaded gun, they will keep being steamrolled.

They care if they get "caught" in crimes. They don't skip a beat. They blatantly and audaciously keep doing as they please, while the "opposition" gaps in disbelief.

Impeachment is the only gun in the Congressional arsenal with bullets in it. It is the only weapon that can "take them out."

The impeachment of Bush and Cheney is a battle between American principle v. Fascist Principle. Impeachment offers an unprecedented opportunity to rally Americans to the side of American principle -- to inspire and engage as they define and fight for the true American values to which they, as Demcrats, are committed. (If they don't watch out, the Republicans could actually beat them to the punch.)

If they would overcome their impeachophobia and stand and fight for the People's Government and the Constitution, they'd not only be solve the problem of their wimpy image, they'd be solve their "no guiding principles" problem too. (And let's not forget the little moral side benefit of finally fulfilling their oath.)
