When we look up at tall mountain ranges temporarily blanketed with snow, to see that line where the snow stays no lower and the trees climb no higher. In our human faculties of arrogance we see that tree line as a lofty summit, our conceit compels us to quantify every thing in our order of it’s perceived quality. We see those trees on that mountainside as superior to the other trees by virtue of altitude and visual quality alone. Were the trees allowed to vote for themselves they would most likely choose lower ground were better soil and a warmer climate, a much better neighborhood to be sure but we humans insist on pigeonholing them with our own standards of quality.
Such is the case with evolution as well the game is fixed. We ask squewed evolutionary questions designed exclusively to favor ourselves. We consider walking upright a noble trait that others should aspire to, while the whale or the shark would mark the box on their evolutionary form with N/A and the alligator would note in the margins, “What qualifies as upright?” Or as Mark Twain once said, “Man is the most noble work of God, I wonder who figured that out?”
If arrogance alone were the deciding factor there would be no argument, our position of first in line would be assured. We have taught gorilla’s to speak with American Sign Language but have ourselves failed as yet to learn one word of Gorilla. We marvel at their intelligence while we completely ignore our own ignorance after all why not? We make our own rules. When monkeys throw their shit at men we see it as the behavior of ignorant creatures behaving as animals instead of the sharp social commentary that it might just as well be intended as.
God is indeed fortunate to be omnipotent, for embarrassment alone might force him into solitude. The constant need to explain to others the behaviors of his highest order of work. To a lost and disoriented whale giving up on life will beach it’s self on land, just as a lost and disoriented human will jump off the Golden Gate Bridge into the water.
Humans will think what a stupid whale getting lost like that while granting special dispensation to the human suicide victim failing to realize that whales equate land and humans with only death.
The evolution of man has continued on for eons and we have always made it over every hurdle thrown in our path. But now however we are faced with shear rock face summit of the evolutionary mountain. Can we as human beings over come being humans? Technology cannot rescue us; we cannot develop some pocket size wonder device to save us from being ourselves. It is in the starkest reality a case of Physician heal thyself.
We in our wide-eyed adolescence of evolution did our homework we developed our societies willy nilley but we had the built in excuse of ignorance. Even so we always aspired at least in principle anyway to a higher plane. We knew and accepted that we were flawed and defective little creatures by our inability to reach that higher plane in practice. Perhaps it is our success that makes us as a species so arrogant, I imagine that during the dark days of the Black Death arrogance was a thin fabric as it is today our comfy down.
One would think that after twenty one centuries or so of the modern era you could expect some level of maturity from the human species. But if anything we have reached the evolutionary high water mark and the tide, refuse and all is now going out. Post world war two there was a general desire among nations of the world to improve the human condition for all. Perhaps this was the only positive by product of unleashing the atom, to make us stop and think even if only momentarily that it was time to grow up as a species.
But that notion was short lived and those nations with the most to gain from a peaceful body to resolve world disputes were the first to pull legalistic knives and cut it to pieces. I have presented my opinion and you might ask, where is you’re proof? To which I answer John Bolton, while he may stand erect physically he is far from standing upright on an evolutionary scale. He is the Neolithic neighbor man up the street that yells at the paperboy a sad sack apologist. A poster boy for the administration explaining to the world that it’s problems are all caused by someone else while explaining to God that the dog ate our homework. He is without a doubt a clear cut case for reverse evolution if ever there was one but not the only one
You could fill all the data banks in the world with the errors of the Bush administration but lets focus on just two. First the cynical use of religion to promote the administrations goals and the ultimate irony of Christian evangelicals who wish to bring about the return of Christ. Then joining hands with Jews if for no other reason but to try and prove them wrong in an arrogant ploy to prove themselves somehow superior while both sides laugh up their sleeve at the others ignorance. The blissful ignorance of a man on the wrong train thinking Jesus is coming to save them rather than Jesus is coming to save us from them.
In fact they might indeed meet Jesus but I fear the meeting will not go for them as well as they’d hoped.
That said, if George W. Bush is not the anti Christ he sure has made it a lot harder for the genuine article to sneak up on mankind. We may be no smarter but we are little less naive and Bush has muddied up the waters for the evil disciple considerably, who could deceive us any more now? Who could start more wars and rumors of wars? It has reached the point where you can tell they’re lying just because they said it and if they didn’t then it must be the truth.
But my main charge against George Walker Bush is that humanity has ceased to aspire to that higher plane, we no longer think in terms of our grand children. Now we are just happy trying to make it to five o’clock, nuclear non-proliferation is no longer a noble goal but merely a political football to score points with. World hunger as well, our solution is to send attack helicopters and then preach about the dollar values of our contribution. We have survived half a century of nuclear brinkmanship yet the problems that we now face us as a species require us to do nothing to condemn ourselves.
Like the Jews expecting a different messiah and not accepting Jesus we as Christians were expecting a different anti Christ a Hollywood anti Christ. We were expecting an Arnold Scwarzeneger or Bruce Willis anti Christ but what we got instead was a Pauley Shore or Bob Denver anti Christ. But whatever works, if you were Satan and you wanted to make sure nothing productive got done who would you call?
The arrogance of humanity to have developed worldwide communication networks but to say it is our official policy is not to talk with them directly. To build a worldwide network of weather satellites so we can watch as we destroy the planets weather patterns. To fight wars over the very substance that is creating both the friction and fueling our decline. Evolution is a hard mistress she decides only one question, continue? Or not? God on the other hand holds out the spirit of love but who outside of that realm of love who in any cold analytical assessment of mankind’s progress could blame him if he swept us into the path of a black hole in an attempt to galacticly sweep us under the rug.
