The Military Draft: A Moral Abomination
The Military Draft: A Moral Abomination

An article in Newsweek, "Why We Need a Draft: A Marine's Lament," stirred up a bit of a hornet's nest online recently. It was written by a marine who fought in Fallujah, Iraq, and actually gave a pretty compelling overview of the practical need for selective service.

I'm sure the marine was right - forcing you or other people to kill or be killed next to him would have been good in the battles he fought in. In fact, I don't doubt that a few million more soldiers would be quite beneficial to the military - and to the foreign policy ambitions of the US government.

On the other hand, many Americans also persuasively argue against the draft, saying it's unnecessary or ineffective in defending America or engaging in foreign interventions. These arguments might very well be sound, and have their place.

1. Constitutional claptrap. The one value of a draft is that it would end this war.

In addition to that, it would make foreign policy the purview of every family with draft age children.

Does anyone think we would be in Iraq now if the military were composed of draftees?

And please think of which language we would all be speaking if there were no draft 1941-1945.

Anyone stating flatly that there should never, ever be a draft for military purposes is thinking in absolute terms and that simply doesn't work in the real world. Remember the real world? It's the one the Bushies love to ignore.

It's all very well to quote the Constitution with absolutes that would declare something forbidden, but recognize that there are circumstances that may arise when sticking by those absolutes can result in the loss of the very Constitution you quote.

One sign of the rational mind is the ability to change with circumstances.
