... It's pretty clear, however, that guys like Greenspan serve themselves first, and then they serve themselves second, too. First, they remain silent in service to their standing with the powers that be. Then, when they've withdrawn themselves from "public service," there's big dough to be made from the inevitable book deal that is sure to follow. Then they serve themselves again - a big heaping of cash, along with the opportunity to distance themselves from the people and the policies they supported when they held their positions of power ...
Tenet, you'll recall, got the Presidential Medal of Freedom hung around his neck by the aforementioned George Bush in recognition of his service to the nation. He also got a healthy retirement package from the government, of course, and a nice teaching gig at Georgetown, not to mention that multi-million dollar book deal allowing him to distance himself from the very same George Bush who had hung that medal on him the very day Bush was also draping Paul Bremer in the same glory.
Bremer, you'll recall, was the Bush operative who began the digging of the deep hole we're in in Iraq, the guy who took apart the entire administrative structure of the Iraqi government, who disbanded the army, and who failed to secure much of anything in Iraq except the oil fields. In fact, if any of these douche bags had said then what they've been saying now, the nation might have been spared lots of misery. But they didn't. And so now we shower them with big cash and the heaping helpings of regard - with pictures on the covers of our magazines as they peddle their ever-changing versions of the truth ...
