Exclusive: Cheney hand seen in leaked Syria stories
Source: Raw Story

by Larisa Alexandrovna

"Allegations that a Syrian envoy admitted during a United Nations meeting Oct. 17 that an Israeli air strike hit a nuclear facility in September are inaccurate and have raised the ire of some in the US intelligence community, who see the Vice President’s hand as allegedly being behind the disinformation.

A United Nations press release discussing the General Assembly’s Disarmament Committee meeting mistranslated comments ascribed to an unnamed Syrian diplomat as saying that Israel had on various occasions “taken action against nuclear facilities, including the 6 July attack in Syria.”

<snip>

According to current and former intelligence sources, the US intelligence community has seen no evidence of a nuclear facility being hit.

US intelligence “found no radiation signatures after the bombing, so there was no uranium or plutonium present,” said one official, wishing to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the subject.

“We don't have any independent intelligence that it was a nuclear facility -- only the assertions by the Israelis and some ambiguous satellite photography from them that shows a building, which the Syrians admitted was a military facility.”

Their statements come as officials claim Syria has begun to 'disassemble' the site. An article today quotes former Administration hawk and onetime Bush United Nations Ambassador John Bolton, who links Syria's alleged action with Iran.

Israel has not spoken publicly about the air raid, other than to confirm that it happened. The confirmation came nearly a month after the Sept. 6 bombing, and provided only that “Israeli officials said the strike took place deep inside Syria.”

"'Radiation signatures' are just the particular type of radiation that some activity would give off," said Dr. Ivan Oelrich, a nuclear weapons expert at the Strategic Security Project at the Federation of American Scientists. "For example, a nuclear bomb would produce a lot of radioactivity and a nuclear reactor explosion would produce a lot of radioactivity but if you measure it carefully so you can tell, not just that it is radioactive, but exactly what particular isotopes are contributing, then it is easy to tell the difference.

"If a reactor explodes or is blown up then I can, with careful measurements of the particular types of radiation, tell what the fuel was for the reactor and how long the reactor had been running when it was hit," Oelrich added. "It gets complicated because you have to take into account how different species are transported in the air, how fast they decay, etc. but it can be done."

<snip>

“The allegations that North Korea was helping to build a nuclear reactor have not been substantiated by US intelligence,” said this intelligence official, adding, “ but that hasn't stopped Dick Cheney and his minions at the NSC, Eliot Abrams and Steve Hadley, from leaking the information , which appears to be misleading in the extreme.”

Requests for comment to the National Security Council went unanswered.

Elliot Abrams, who currently serves as the Deputy National Security Adviser for Global Democracy Strategy, was convicted during the Iran-Contra scandal for withholding information from Congress. He was pardoned by President George H. W. Bush along with other Iran-Contra players, some of whom have reappeared in the current Bush administration.

Iran Contra was a criminal scandal in which the Reagan-Bush White House sold weapons to Iran – an avowed enemy of the United States – then funneled the money to extremist anti-Communist group of guerrilla fighters called the Contras, who were fighting the democratically elected government of Nicaragua"

4. UN taking action for Syria error
Edited on Fri Oct-19-07 10:10 AM by Scurrilous
<snip>

"The United Nations said Thursday action would be taken against the interpreter responsible for an erroneous report that Syria has a nuclear facility and expressed regret at the incident.

Syria denied that one of its representatives told the U.N. General Assembly's disarmament committee on Tuesday that Israel had attacked a Syrian nuclear facility. It said the representative was misquoted, demanded a correction, and insisted that "such facilities do not exist in Syria."

After more than seven hours of investigation Wednesday, U.N. officials agreed the Syrian delegate was misquoted. "There was no use of the word nuclear," U.N. associate spokesman Farhan Haq said.

The mistake made headlines in the Middle East and heightened concerns over Damascus' nuclear ambitions. Those ambitions were under scrutiny following a Sept. 6 Israeli airstrike on an unknown target in northeastern Syria near the border with Turkey. Widespread reports say it may have been a nascent nuclear facility, a claim Syria has denied."

IAEA Viewing Satellite Imagery Of Israel Syria Strike-Sources

"U.N. experts have been provided satellite imagery of the site struck last month by Israel warplanes and are analyzing it for signs that it might have been a secret nuclear facility, diplomats said Friday

One of the diplomats indicated that the photos came from U.S intelligence. Another said the images, which have been studied by experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency since being received Thursday, don't at first examination appear to substantiate reports that the target was a nuclear installation, but emphasized that the images were still being looked at.

The diplomats were briefed on the agency's receipt of the images. Officials of the Vienna-based nuclear watchdog said they had no comment."

6. There are conflicting stories from the NYT's on this "strike."
One report from a Syrian newspaper allowed reporters to go into the supposed "strike" area and there was no evidence of anything. NYT's had it out the same day as the report that Israel had a strike on Syria border taking out Korean Nukes. I posted the article saying the strike hadn't occurred and it didn't get much interest. Both of the articles were days before CNN picked up on it and made a big issue of saying that Israel had "definitely" struck some kind of nuclear site in progress with No. Korean weapons on Syria's border.

So...the whole thing is very mysterious....and I wonder about the Cheney tie in to both NYT and CNN... We all know that Judy Miller is gone...but it seems she had back up. :-(

If propaganda has gotten to this extent...we need to be very worried. We have Dems in power in Congress yet media seems to get even worse ...and who thought it could get worse.

8. Yes. I specifically recall the article you speak of. The journalists were taken,...
,...right to the alleged strike point.

I mean, I've known for quite some time about the sea of propaganda flowing from WHIG and whatnot. However, to plant stories for purposes of literally instigating and inciting dangerous reactions leading to very serious repercussions to the U.S.A. surely qualifies as treason.

7. junior & his dick are certainly priceless

junior and his dick intend to frighten and intimidate us good folks, their secrecy and methods are calculated to make deaths, even a small number of them, more shocking than everyday deaths. But if we look at societies that have undergone horrors beyond most people’s ability to imagine, horrors greater than any modern terror, we find something very interesting.

10. So Bush's gaff when asked about N.K. no proliferation agreement...
wasn't a gaff. Bush had said when asked about the agreement that it was just a back door way to him to comment on the Israel event. At first it looked like a gaff linking NK to the event, but in light of this it was probably a planned gaff. All this seems like it is a way to stir the media into talking about nuclear bombs in the Middle East without the admin having to (since the admin has cried wolf too often).

13. Maybe This Is Why Cheney
wanted the 6 Nukes loaded on the B52 sent to the Middle East,
so somehow they could be planted and blamed on Syria? :tinfoilhat:

Who really knows where they were destined for (only the scapegoated Officers know)
but it's suspicious that all of this happened around the same time frame.:think:

16. Just a minor translation err. Or part of a bigger scheme.
These little "errors" are probably not things in and of themselves enough to make cases in court. But when one stands back and gains a perspective on the overall picture, it is literally overwhelming in every aspect of this administration, that crimes are being committed. Treasonous crimes.

18. And once again, GHWB lurks in the shadows.
US intelligence does not show Syrian nuclear weapons program, officials say, October 18, 2007

He was pardoned by President George H. W. Bush along with other Iran-Contra players, some of whom have reappeared in the current Bush administration.

For someone who can't recall where he was on November 22, 1963, GHWB sure didn't forget to pardon his fellow conspirators for future treason.

20. How "exclusive" is it to attribute an evil act to Cheney?
It seems to me that every terrible crime and abomination of this most awful of administrations comes back, over and over and over again, to the Dick. He seems to be on a Holy Quest to single-handedly (OK, with some help from that Addington creep) destroy everything good and decent about America.

The Dick is our worst nightmare coming true, every single damn day. Why, God, why?
