Obama: RFK revisited.

U.S America yearns for a savior. It is the oldest story in the Human condition. Mausoleums in graveyards exalt that very yearning which brings tragic results. Heroes come and go and never resolve any social problems. The myth of a super individual coming to save the day is deleterious. So who perpetuates that myth of a savior? It comes from monotheists who sell delusions in the market place of ideas. A savior does all work for you and all you got to do is praise him and send him/her money. Hero worship comes from the King James Bible all the way to Ayn Rand. Me? I wait for the next American counter-cultural movement, a renaissance if you will. It while is a long wait for that occurrence. I am not naive in thinking that collectivist movements make history. I know that only individuals make history. We are brainwashed in thinking that there can’t be movements without leaders. We romanticize the boss who created a business with his own will and determination, while the hordes that helped are just background props for his/her own ego. Remember when political speeches just had American Flags behind the podium of the speaker? Now they have thematic Human props standing behind the candidate. If you are a right-winger, you have a military troop standing at attention behind you and if you are a lefty, you have commoners standing behind you dressed like they just came from McDonald's. Gee…how populist can you get?
When Robert F. Kennedy got whacked in 68, it drove me to the ultra left. All my wholesome American dreams were smashed. I have seen a generation of dreamy eyed idealistic youth experience that very trauma. Many years later, here comes Obama. He has charisma and courage to inspire a new generation of young America. This is a repeat of 1968. You got John Edwards playing the role of Eugene McCarthy and playing the role Hubert Humphrey is Hillary. Obama is RFK and Martin Luther King rolled into one.
Now we got Huckabee playing Richard M Nixon. Holy dog Ca! Ca!
Let this be warning to all you young U.S Americans, evil does lurked in the shadows of the USA and you don’t have to wear a tin foil hat to know this. The rich pigs of this nation are not going to permit some charismatic political Messiah to rain on their empire.
All I'm saying is, don’t get your hopes up too high.

In 68 anti-war was still a minority.

I agree with your cautioning, although I think the establishment is more comfortable with Obama than they are with Edwards.

And before any more comparisons with MLK or RFK, you need to watch Jesse Jackson's 1988 convention speech and remember that Jackson was the early front-runner winning a number of the early states and eventually finished second overall. I (white male southerner) voted for Jesse, partly to scare the Hell out of the party leaders and it did scare them.

I think Obama's speeches pale by comparison with JJ and the others.

3. Little early for that comparison

Don't get me wrong, Obama may yet deserve the comparison but it's too early to say. I don't think he deserves the comparison to MLK though. There was and could only be one MLK.

4. Obama is NOT and never will be the type of person for this country

that JFK was. Any person low enough to flame and dis Ted Kennedy after what he has done in congress for Obama's people is the low of low. And to say Al Gore and John Kerry divided this country. His head has now gotten so damn big he thinks he can slur and flame everybody and still be able to prance and rant. Labor and Union made this country. What right has he to flame them. Along with seniors....If the press was doing their job and of course they aren't, because their republican corporate masters are telling them to help Obama win, all the shit he spews would be out there for people to read. Of course republicans want Obama. They want to win and he would ensure that.

8. No. The Republicans will NOT win.

And no matter what you or I think about Obama (or how right we are...and since when does that matter) he is showing an ability to reach our...self-involved...young. The self-styled, smugly superior independents who do not besmirch their fair hands with dirty party politics. Anything that gets them off their asses and voting is a plus. Probably. And, frankly, they are so jaded it would have to be a novelty candidate. Hillary reminds them of Mom (she does me, but for me that's a plus) and Obama doesn't. He's shiny new and they get the glory of talking down to the rest of us because they will be the first generation to vote in a black president. Proving they are the first American generation without prejudice (except for the sexism and other stuff). Don't ever knock the appeal of positive self-validation.

9. JFK/ RFK/ OBAMA

I don't know how old you are, but I lived through the Kennedy era. We idealized the Kennedys. Yes, they were inspiring, charismatic, and powerful speakers. But their flaws, which were pretty well hidden at the time by a protective media, would no doubt be scrutinized now, and their scandals, which are still coming to light, investigated. Their murders changed us forever, but the human tendency is to lionize our heroes who have been struck down.
Having said all that, I believe Obama is the most inspiring, charismatic, energizing, intelligent candidate I have ever seen. And he seems to be forthright about his life and youthful mistakes. He has the Kennedy vision, but with his own integrity and honor. Obama will bring out the best in us.
