Clintons\' picture with Rezko has FOX Friends in a tizzy
Newshounds
1-25-08

Steve Doocy didn\'t come out and say \"this is huuuuge\" today 1/25/08, but he was clearly excited at the release of a picture (dating by the hairdo I\'m estimating 1992-1993) of the Clintons posing with none other than Tony Rezko between them. Rezko, you\'ll recall, is under indictment in Chicago and was pointedly brought up by Hillary Clinton in Monday\'s Democratic debate as a \"slumlord\" who Barack Obama represented and has had a long-term relationship with.

Doocy first excitedly teased that \"A very embarrassing moment is about to take place on the Democrats\' side.\" and reminded viewers of the exchange Monday night. Brian Kilmeade responded \"So wait, Tony Rezko\'s the problem with Barack Obama and that\'s Tony Rezko in the middle with Hillary Clinton???\" Doocy answered \"Yes, can you believe it? How delicious is that?\"

Thirty minutes later, after Gretchen Carlson made a grand exit from the set to go to the Miss America pageant, Doocy repeated that \"Suddenly out of nowhere this morning on the Internet the most embarrassing photograph of the presidential campaign has surfaced. it links Hillary Clinton to that man right there, between her and her husband Bill Clinton...that guy is Tony Resko.\" He reminded viewers again of Monday night\'s exchange, papraphrasing that Hillary Clinton said Obama \"had been cozy\" with this guy and his slum landlord business (actually, she charged that Obama was representing Rezko)...

1. Can I post my picture with me and Hillary Clinton and then see if she remembers
me? My name is Marcus if anyone gets the chance to ask her. Surely she remembers me. I mean, obviously, we met.

2. You have a staged photo with yourself in between Hillary and Bill?
Not just one where you came across them on the street or something?

How much did you contribute?

I can post one as well (with the person's permission) - fully staged (it's not me, it's a friend of the family who's simply a photographer.) Very nice picture BTW.

5. Fox Serious News at 6pm explained this had been leaked
by Obama campaign. They explained if this picture had serious
implications it would have been signed by Bill Clinton. No Signature.
People pose all the time with people whom they do not know.
Krautheimer explained this hurt Barak more than the Clintons
because it brings up Rezco and Fox has to explain Barak and his
real connection to Rezco. Latest reports on Barak's situation
The Clintons never received money from Rezco.

6. In terms of balanced coverage
I do think the Hsu incident has not been adequately covered, at least in proportion to this. Hsu appears to have been finding straw donors to make his donations, yet the source of his money was never revealed (I would assume it is the PRC, as they certainly are putting money into our political system, as the 1996 election showed). The entire story died fairly quickly. I suspect this was a glimpse for the observant public into how foreign governments (as well as other donors) can put money into a campaign.

That said, Obama is going to get hit over the head with this topic repeatedly, while nary a word about what appears to be a much more serious problem with a major Hillary fundraiser.

10. Here's one explanation:

http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB82/
----------
Following further high-level policy review, Ronald Reagan issued National Security Decision Directive (NSDD) 114, dated November 26, 1983, concerned specifically with U.S. policy toward the Iran-Iraq war. The directive reflects the administration's priorities: it calls for heightened regional military cooperation to defend oil facilities, and measures to improve U.S. military capabilities in the Persian Gulf, and directs the secretaries of state and defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to take appropriate measures to respond to tensions in the area. It states, "Because of the real and psychological impact of a curtailment in the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf on the international economic system, we must assure our readiness to deal promptly with actions aimed at disrupting that traffic." It does not mention chemical weapons .

Soon thereafter, Donald Rumsfeld (who had served in various positions in the Nixon and Ford administrations, including as President Ford's defense secretary, and at this time headed the multinational pharmaceutical company G.D. Searle & Co.) was dispatched to the Middle East as a presidential envoy. His December 1983 tour of regional capitals included Baghdad, where he was to establish "direct contact between an envoy of President Reagan and President Saddam Hussein," while emphasizing "his close relationship" with the president . Rumsfeld met with Saddam, and the two discussed regional issues of mutual interest, shared enmity toward Iran and Syria, and the U.S.'s efforts to find alternative routes to transport Iraq's oil; its facilities in the Persian Gulf had been shut down by Iran, and Iran's ally, Syria, had cut off a pipeline that transported Iraqi oil through its territory. Rumsfeld made no reference to chemical weapons, according to detailed notes on the meeting .

Rumsfeld also met with Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz, and the two agreed, "the U.S. and Iraq shared many common interests." Rumsfeld affirmed the Reagan administration's "willingness to do more" regarding the Iran-Iraq war, but "made clear that our efforts to assist were inhibited by certain things that made it difficult for us, citing the use of chemical weapons, possible escalation in the Gulf, and human rights." He then moved on to other U.S. concerns . Later, Rumsfeld was assured by the U.S. interests section that Iraq's leadership had been "extremely pleased" with the visit, and that "Tariq Aziz had gone out of his way to praise Rumsfeld as a person" .
