NYT editorial: Horrifying and Unnecessary; Bush "unbound by the laws of civilization"
Editorial
Horrifying and Unnecessary
Published: March 2, 2008

In the next few days President Bush is expected to again claim the right to order mistreatment of prisoners that any civilized person would regard as torture. Mr. Bush is planning to veto a law that would require the C.I.A. and all the intelligence services to abide by the restrictions on holding and interrogating prisoners contained in the United States Army Field Manual. Mr. Bush says the Army rules are too restrictive.

What are these burdens? In addition to a blanket prohibition of torture, the manual specifically bans:

¶ Forcing a prisoner to be naked, perform sexual acts or pose in a sexual manner.

¶ Placing hoods or sacks over the head of a prisoner, and using duct tape over the eyes.

¶ Applying beatings, electric shocks, burns or other forms of physical pain.

¶ Waterboarding.

¶ Using military working dogs.

¶ Inducing hypothermia or heat injury.

¶ Conducting mock executions.

¶ Depriving a prisoner of necessary food, water or medical care.

Such practices have long been prohibited by American laws and international treaties respected by Republican and Democratic presidents. Mr. Bush, however, declared that he was unbound by the laws of civilization in responding to the barbarism of Sept. 11, 2001. And reports soon surfaced about the abuse of prisoners at detention centers in Afghanistan, the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and secret Central Intelligence Agency prisons.

Finally, in 2006, a compliant, Republican-controlled Congress outlawed the kinds of abuse and torture that Mr. Bush’s lawyers had turned into government policy. Unfortunately, Congress applied the prohibitions only to the military, and Mr. Bush immediately made clear that he would issue whatever orders he wanted to the intelligence agencies. In response, Congress approved an amendment to the intelligence budget bill this year that binds those agencies to the same rules as the military.

Opponents of Mr. Bush’s policies on prisoners have long argued that it is immoral, dangerous and counterproductive to abuse and torture prisoners. We do not hold out much hope that the president will heed our last, urgent plea not to veto this bill. We urge him to read the Army Field Manual, which says: “Use of torture by U.S. personnel would bring discredit upon the U.S. and its armed forces while undermining domestic and international support for the war effort. It could also place U.S. and allied personnel in enemy hands at greater risk of abuse.”...

***

Or he could read the letter that Gen. David Petraeus, the commander in Iraq, wrote to his troops.

“Some may argue that we would be more effective if we sanctioned torture or other expedient methods to obtain information from the enemy,” General Petraeus wrote. “They would be wrong. Beyond the basic fact that such actions are illegal, history shows that they also are frequently neither useful nor necessary.”

1. And we think this administration will go quietly into that good night?
While we throw grenades at one another here on DU, let us never forget the grave danger we are in so long as George W. Bush and his cronies hold the levers of power.

They are not through with us. Not even close.

2. Gee, and the NYT supported his heinous, genocidal war on Iraq, and the
slaughter of 1.2 million innocent people to get their oil, and the inevitable set up of torture chambers in that country to terrorize the rest of the Iraqis and rid them of any notions they might have about independence and using their oil revenues for social justice. Just, 'sign over your oil rights, suckers!' Surprise, surprise, that this bloodthirsty little shit not only loves torture, but is demanding immunity from torture laws.

Tut-tut, says the NYT. I see--and now they're "liberal" again. Forgive and forget, huh?

5. And too guilty of despicable crimes also
to the point all that really matters to him (and his veepee)
is to make sure all their crimes will be covered-up as soon as
they can possibly be.

8. If Only Impeaching War Criminals Could Be Made More "Stylish" ...
... we might then see the NY Times, or Madame Squeaker, or Conyers, or even some mythical non-sociopathic Repub go beyond all their "urging" of SOMEBODY ELSE to DO some damn thing.

At least this lip service is better than silence.

Impeachment remains our ONLY moral, patriotic, reunifying-the-nation option.

9. The SCREW YORK TIMES did everything it could to get Bush in office!
Except for Krugman, everyone else at that fascist rag kissed Bush ass and lied any lie to get him in the Oval Office. This is too little and too late from that worthless fascist rag.

10. The NYT is hopelessly contaminated.
The NYT has got Kristol on it.
Nothing they do will ever clear the stench of Neo Con from its pages.
I wouldn't insult a parrot by lining his cage with it.
The same goes for any other publication providing aid an comfort to 21st century fascists.
CBS News has Limbaugh on it. Contact was brief but the contamination is permanent.
If they were to burn and rebuild the studio the stench would remain.
Newsweek has Rove on it. It get s the same permanent shun as the NYT and CBS news.
I'm sure they couldn't care less in these places about a single lost customer or reader.
But I can't believe I'm the only one that gags at the smell of neo con.

11. You're not the only one sickened by the CCCP
Edited on Sun Mar-02-08 10:33 PM by Joe Bacon
CCCP = CORPORATE CONTROLLED CONSERVATIVE PRESS!

No matter which Democrat is elected, a high priority has to go to reinstating the Fairness doctrine and breaking up the media monopolies.
