Unasked Questions on Iraq War 5 years later
Most of these questions required no particular special or classified knowledge to come up with, simply a memory of the recent Cold War nuclear stand-off, history of business interests lobbying for military intervention, and a passing knowledge of current events like where the 9/11 hijackers came from and the role of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in the WTC attacks.

1. Is it not true that the reason we did not bomb the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War was because we knew they could retaliate?

2. Is it not also true that we are willing to bomb Iraq now because we know it cannot retaliate- which just confirms that there is no real threat?

23. How can our declared goal of bringing democracy to Iraq be believable when we prop up dictators throughout the Middle East and support military tyrants like Musharaf in Pakistan, who overthrew a democratically-elected president?

27. Why do the oil company executives strongly support this war if oil is not the real reason we plan to take over Iraq?

1. Answers.
1. Yes.

27. Well, completely apart from any other reasons, this war has quadrupled the price of oil.

"8. Is it not true that northern Iraq, where the administration claimed al-Qaeda were hiding out, is in the control of our "allies," the Kurds?"

The Kurds are nobody's allies. At various times they've drawn support from almost every government in the Middle East from Iran to Israel, Turkey to Saudi Arabia. But the Kurds aren't on anybody's side except their own. Sometimes, other people can happen to be on THEIR side.

"13. How can Hussein be compared to Hitler when he has no navy or air force, and now has an army 1/5 the size of twelve years ago, which even then proved totally inept at defending the country?"

He was, apparently, Budget Hitler.

To be fair to the Iraqi Army of 1991, their forces were mostly ground troops, with their airborne capabilities outnumbered three to one, and even the planes that they had were mostly older Russian birds. The Russians were never keen on exporting their top of the line stuff, so much of their fighter force was antiquated, and proved easy pickings for the more advanced US birds.

Once they lost control of their airspace, it was pretty much over, since close air support could then make haggis out of any significant resistance by ground forces.

2. point on the Kurds is the area was more under our control than Saddams. Also,
your point on Saddam's forces reinforces what Ron Paul and I are saying.
