For the second time in a week, Bill Clinton offered high praise for Republican presidential nominee John McCain — the candidate who could end up squaring off against Clinton’s wife Hillary.

At a stop in rural Pennsylvania on Thursday, Bill told the gathering that McCain is a “moderate” who “has given all you can give for this country without dying for it.”

He said McCain is on the right side in opposing the torture of enemy combatants and on the global warming issue, which “just about crosses the bridge for .”

Clinton also told the audience that the race should not about the past, but about who is going to do more for the country in the future, ABC News reported. That person, he said, is Hillary.

One week ago Clinton expressed similar sentiments at a gathering in North Carolina, calling McCain a war hero who had demonstrated his love for his country.

Clinton noted that McCain supported campaign finance reform and “he doesn’t think global warming is a myth … so it is not going to be all that easy to beat him.”

At that same campaign stop, Clinton angered the Barack Obama campaign by saying that McCain and Hillary share a love of America — without mentioning Obama.

“I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country,” he said.

3. Strategy
If Obama gets the nomination, which he likely will, and if he loses to McCain, Hillary is setting the stage for 2012. McCain may have a horrible 4 years or health issues precluding a 2nd term. She wants to be ready. So Bill is supporting McCain because if Obama wins it all, he will likely be a two term President, eliminating any chance for Hillary.

11. McCain could be in too for ...

What makes you think that McCain couldn't get an unfunded personal mandate through. I suppose he'll up the ante by requiring people in foreclosure to "pay their bills". And of course the unemployed will be required to "get jobs".

4. What, again?? Someone needs to give Bill Clinton the hook and pull him offstage
for the duration. At this point, it cannot be denied that these statements praising McCain are deliberate.
How can he be permitted to do this? I call "treason"...

5. Clinton Praises "Moderate" McCain
from: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/03/clinton-praises.html

He said McCain was on the right side of issues like being against torture of enemy combatants and global warming, which "just about crosses the bridge for them (Republicans)."

The praise from Clinton comes as McCain, with the Republican nomination locked up and trying to rebrand his Maverick label, has tried to distance himself from President Bush, most notably on foreign policy. In a speech this week McCain talked about the need for more diplomacy.

McCain and the Republicans say, "Thanks, Bill!" Whose side is he on other than Hillary's?

7. Well, that's not very cleverly disguised, is it
What could "I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country," possibly mean other than "Hillary and McCain love America and Obama doesn't."

I'd love to hear anybody try to explain any other possible meaning.

8. Further explanation ...
If he didn't mean to imply that there are only two candidates who love America, then he would have said, "I think it IS a great thing THAT WE WILL HAVE an election this year where with two people who love this country and ARE devoted to the interest of this country,” he said.

9. Are you a mind reader? I saw Hillary today at a rally in Louisville.
She was awesome and her policies are straightforward on universal health care, getting out of Iraq, education, college loans, etcs. She was dynamite. I will probably vote for her in Kentucky primary, but I also appreciate Obama and will support him if he wins the nomination of course. Hillary and Bill came to Kentucky prior to the '06 elections when the Ky Dem Party was flat broke and Ky had a GOPer governor for the first time in 30 years; Hill came first and raised $600,000; Bill came months later and raised $600,000 for our party. Neither took one thin dime; in fact they paid all their expenses. Kentucky now has a dem guv; we got rid of Anne Northrup and have the fab John Yarmuth. That is not why I am voting for Hillary, but it is evidence of their committment to the Democratic Party. Obama came that year also, and he spoke at a democratic rally at the minor league baseball stadium. I had heard him formerly at Emily's List luncheon. He is dynamic and impressive. I only wonder why he is running this year; he is singularly inexperienced and is so wonderfully young. We could have started with a fabulous woman pres and graduated to the first black pres. What a monumental occasion for the party of the people that would have been!
